Purpose The Department of Performing Arts program at Weber State is based on five primary purposes: (1) To develop aesthetically aware and artistically discriminating citizens; (2) To provide opportunities for all students to participate in creative, artistic experiences and to encourage community members to participate in the performing arts; (3) To develop artistic competence and sensitivity; (4) To provide for career development in the arts through the preparation of teachers, performing artists, scholars, and technical specialists; and (5) To expose students and community to classic and contemporary works in all genres of the performing arts and to continue to provide the finest possible performances in the arts. Education The Department of Performing Arts, with its unique integrated emphases, educates men and women at the undergraduate level in dance, music, and theatre arts. The Department's diverse professional faculty specializes in designing educational experiences which foster personal and professional growth while nurturing leadership qualities. The Department's degree programs prepare students for professional careers in teaching and performance as well as in technical specialities while providing the liberal arts background necessary for graduate study. In the Department's performing arts series, students and faculty participate in professionally produced dance, musical, and theatrical events. DANCE AREA Description The objectives of the Dance Area of the Department of Performing Arts are: (1) To develop an awareness of dance as an art form. (2) To provide opportunities for students and community members to participate in a variety of dance experiences. (3) To develop technical competence and critical thinking skills for modern dance, ballet, and jazz dance forms. (4) To prepare teachers qualified to teach the content in the Utah core curriculum for dance. (5) To provide opportunites for artistic interaction between students and area dance professionals. Education Two departmental minors are offered: (1) Dance and (2) Dance Teaching. Dance minors follow a program which provides a common core of courses followed by elective- courses. A minimum of twenty-five (25) credit hours (GPA of 2.25 or better) must be completed in the Dance Area courses. Teaching minors must also complete a minimum of twenty-five (25) credit hours (GPA of 2.25 or better) from the Dance Area courses and, in addition, satisfy all requirements for the Certification Program as outlined by the School of Education. Dance Teaching Minors are strongly encouraged to select Teaching Majors in subject areas which Utah secondary schools are required to teach. Orchesis Dance Theatre Orchesis Dance Theatre is an umbrella organization which offers a broad range of dance experiences for students to work with area dance professionals. Students have the opportunity to choreograph and/or perform in professionally produced concerts in the Allred Theatre. PROGRAM: COMPOSITE MUSIC THE A TRE EMPHASIS BACHELOR DEGREE General Requirements: • Specific Requirements (see index). • Requirements for General Education (see index). • No minor is required. • All major courses must be a C (2.00) or better. • Must achieve an overall GPA of C (2.00) or better. • 183 total credit hours are required. Sixty of the total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). Specific Requirements: Pre-major Core for Musical Theatre Emphasis • Dance-169(3). • Music -104 (3), 109 (3) (if needed for admission to 110). • Theatre Arts - 100 (3), 110 (3). Composite Musical Theatre Emphasis (96 credit hours) • Dance (24 credits): 147 (1), 148 (1), 149 (1), 241 (2), 247 (1), 248 (1), 249 (1), 291 (1) (may be repeated 3 times), 344 (1), 349 (1), 481 (3), 491 (2); Electives (5). • Music (33 credits): 110 (4), 111 (4), 112 (4), 144 and/or 344 (3), 216 (1), 219 (2), 339 (3), Private Voice (131 through 431) (12). • Theatre Arts (39 credits): 121 (3), 122 (3), 210 (3), 211 (4), 212 (3), 230 (3), 244 (3), 275 (2), 311 (3), 444 (3), Upper division electives (9). Electives to be chosen in consultation with advisor. PROGRAM: DANCE MINOR AND DANCE TEACHING MINOR General Requirements: • Minors must achieve a GPA of 2.25 or better in minor courses. Specific Requirements (25 credit hours with advisor approval): • Required courses (18 credit hours minimum): Dance 147 (1), 149 (1), 169 (3), 247 (1), 249 (1), 271 (2), 291*(1), 332 (2), 349*(1), 386 (2), 491**(2), PE 364 (2). • Elective courses (7 credit hours): Dance 148 (1), 241 (2), 248 (1), 292 (1-6), 330 (2), 340 (2), 492 (1-6), support courses from other disciplines. *May be repeated three times. **May be repeated once. Introduction to Dance (3) A survey course including the history and evolution of dance and critical appreciation for contemporary forms. 241. Dance Composition and Improvisation (2) An introduction to the process, art, and craft of choreography using improvisation to experientially explore the elements of dance. Prerequisite: Dance 149 (Offered 1986-87 and alternate years). 247. Intermediate Ballet (1) Classical ballet technique on an intermediate level, with an emphasis on performance. Prerequisite: Dance 147. 248. Jazz Dance, Intermediate (1) To provide the intermediate dance student with experience in jazz styles as they relate to technique, composition, performance, philosophy, and aesthetics. 249. Modern Dance, Intermediate (1) Modern dance technique on an intermediate level. Prerequisite: Dance 149. 271. Professional Activities (2) Basic skills, techniques and methods of folk, square and social dance. For physical education majors and minors. 291. Dance Preparation (1) Preparation and rehearsal of dance composition to be presented in concert. Prerequisite: Instructor approval. May be repeated for a maximum of 4 credit hours. 292. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-6) (Offered as needed) 332. Techniques and Materials for Teaching Modern Dance (2) Methods, teaching techniques, and practical experience in teaching modern dance. Prerequisites: Dance 149 and 249. 340. Dance Production (2) A practical application of principles which serve the presentation of dance. The course deals with choreographic problems including staging, lighting, costumes and movement. Prerequisites: Instructor approval. 344. Dance for Musical Theatre (2) Dance skills and techniques taken from the repertoire of the modem musical theatre. Special emphasis on characterization and style as demonstrated by the works of the leading choreographers of this genre. Prerequisites: Dance 148 and 149. 349. Advanced Modern Dance (1) Exercises and activities to develop strength, flexibility, endurance, and technical dance skill. Prerequisite: Dance 249. May be repeated for a maximum of 4 credit hours with instructor approval. 386. Field Experience (2) A course designed to provide opportunities for students to gain practical experience in the field by assisting in the activities of community agencies, schools, and Weber State. Prerequisite: PE 364. 480. Independent Study (1-5) Individual work or work in small groups by arrangements in special topics not included in the announced course offerings. Prerequisite: Approval of instructor. 489. Cooperative Work Experience (1-9) Open to all students in Dance who meet the minimum Cooperative Work Experience requirements of the department. The course objective for each student will be developed between the student, the department, and a suitable employer providing the opportunity for an on-the-job experience. Evaluation of course participants will be shared between the employer, student and the department. Grade and amount of credit will be determined by the department. Student Services Interdisc.
