Teaching Reading in the Primary Grades (3) A, S Analysis of developmental reading skills with emphasis on readiness for reading, phonic and structural analysis, word recognition, use of the basal reader, and reading for various purposes. Prerequisites: Educ 306 or permission of instructor. *340. Word Recognition Skills (3) Understanding and teaching word recognition skills with emphasis on phonic analysis skills, structural analysis skills, dictionary skills, and spelling. 342. Kindergarten and Primary Education (3) The learning characteristics and learning needs of young children and how these are provided for in the program of the kindergarten and first grade. *343. Classroom Strategies in Secondary School (4) A, W, S Select five modules for instruction and practice in specific teaching strategies from among such areas as laboratory method, individualizing instruction, games and simulations, inquiry and problem solving. Must be taken concurrently with Educ 462. Prerequisites: Educ 301, 303. 465. Diagnosis of Reading Skills (3) A, S Analysis and diagnosis of reading difficulties. Prerequisites: Educ 306 or 462. 466. Corrective Reading Methods (3) Su, W Principles and techniques for remediating reading problems. Prerequisites: Educ 306 and 465. *470. Learning in the Schools (3) A, W, S Principles of learning and management and their application to the school situation. Prerequisite: student teaching. 475. Aerospace Education (3) Concerned with knowledge, skills, attitudes and communication about aerospace activity, and the impact of air and space upon society. 476. Advanced Aerospace Education (3) Develops an understanding of the political, economic, social and educational implications of aerospace technology. *478. Practicum in Reading (4) A, W, S Application of diagnostic and corrective reading techniques with reading disabled children. Prerequisites: Educ 465 and 466. *479. Student Teaching in Special Education (6) A, W, S Supervised teaching in selected special education programs in an elementary or secondary school. Prerequisite: successful completion of mild/moderate Endorsement course work. 482. Adult Education (3) A survey course in adult education with emphasis on philosophy, principles, and practices as evidenced in programs and various adult education organizations. Prerequisites: professional education course work, teaching experience, or approval of the instructor. *483. Individually Prescribed Program (1-9) Su, A, W, S Designed primarily for teachers fulfilling recertification requirements or personal needs. 484. Supervision of Student Teachers (3) The cooperating teacher-student relationship and the factors and conditions that contribute to successful student teaching experiences. *487. Directed Experiences with Students (1) A, W, S Directed experiences with elementary and secondary school students in cooperating schools. Students may register for one unit of credit per quarter for a maximum of three quarter hours. *488. Teaching Practicum in Elementary Education (15) Su,A,W,S Student teaching experience in a public school to synthesize theory and practice. Weekly seminar on campus. Prerequisite: completion of professional core through Educ 316. 492. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-6) In order to provide flexibility and to meet many different needs, a number of specific offerings are possible using this catalog number. When the number is used it will be accompanied by brief and specific descriptive title. The specific title with the credit authorized for the particular offering will appear on the student transcript. May be taken on a Credit/No Credit basis. *495. Teaching Practicum in Secondary Education (15) A,W,S A preparation workshop followed by a public school assignment. Modules on related areas are taken concurrently. Prerequisites: Educ 463. 496. Processes of Instructional Design (5) A systematic approach to solving instructional problems through the development of goals, objectives, instructional strategies and field testing of instructional products. The course consists of two modules, including a project contract. *498. Synthesis of the Teaching Program (3) Su, A, W, S Synthesis of total elementary education program. Modules on educational leadership, professional relationships, and background of American education. Service hours required. May immediately preceed or follow student teaching. *499. Senior Seminar (3) Su, A, W, S Regular seminar sessions examining issues in secondary schools and curriculum. Senior Project. May be taken concurrently with Educ 495 with instructor's permission.
