Show General Information Distance Learning Degree and Certificate Programs Associate Program Administrator: Tamara Aird Currently through the distance learning area, students can earn a Bachelor of Science in Allied Health Sciences which is offered through a combination of independent study and intensive workshop sessions to health care personnel in Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and Washington. It is possible for students located away from campus to complete their associate's degree through independent study. Students can also earn continuing education certificates in housekeeping and merchandising by completing core classes offered through independent study. Microwave Courses Each quarter a criminal justice course is broadcast by microwave to Logan, Richfield, Vernal, and Orem. The microwave system features two-way audio and video communication between class sites and originates at WSC. Using this method of instruction allows students living in distant areas to participate in college courses, as well as reducing instructional travel costs. International Programs Program Administrator: Dennis A. DeFrain Associate Program Administrator: Pam Rogers Program Assistants: John Dallimore, Kazuyo Torabayashi. International programs are providing unique learning experiences for students from foreign countries and for Weber State students. Currently, programs are scheduled from the countries of Japan, Taiwan, and Korea. • Japan Programs: In cooperation with Japan Air lines (JAL),four separate programs are being conducted on an annual basis in the foreseeable future. The first program , a one year language and culture program, will start in April of each year with approximately 60 students. The second program, a two-year associate of applied science degree in Secretarial Science program will begin in September of each year with 50 students. A three week program for JAL stewardess aspirants is scheduled for June of each year. Finally, a three-week summer program for Japanese youth from 13-18 years of age will be conducted with 30 to 40 students annually. In conjunction with the Hankyu Corporation, another large Japanese firm, a two-week summer program for 13-18 year old Japanese students will be conducted annually. • Korean Programs: Weber State is offering independent study courses to students in Korea and Korean people in the United States. Additionally, a two-week language and culture program is being planned and a three week homestay language and culture program for Korean youth is scheduled to be offered in July and August of each year. • Taiwan Programs: Each summer 60-65 Chinese students from Taiwan explore the National Parks of the West while studying United States History and English. Two 1-month sessions in this unique "Discover America" program are conducted on an annual basis. This program won the regional first place award for innovative programming from the National University Continuing Education Association competition. Professional Development Associate Program Administrators: Barbara Dirks, Saundra Hansen Over 3,000 students enroll yearly in professional development programs which are designed to help students advance in their professions and to assist others interested in career changes. Seminars and Workshops Career-oriented workshops and seminars are presented to help students keep abreast of new knowledge and techniques in their chosen careers. Programs are offered in allied health, law enforcement, technology, management, communications, writing, and many other areas. Surviving Your Future in Nursing, Advanced Project Management, Work Smarter Not Harder, Implementing Just-In-Time, How to Hire and Fire Employees, Supervisory Training for First Line Supervisors, and Managing and Scheduling Shiftwork are just a few of the seminars and workshops we have presented in the past. Certificate Programs Students can earn a continuing education certificate in organizational communications, human resources management, supervision, production and inventory technology, production and inventory control technology, and customer service. Each certificate program is composed of several short courses focusing on significant areas of the subject matter. In-house Training Program In-house training provides many benefits to companies and employees including the opportunity to train a sizable group at the company's location, at convenient times for employees. This type of training also ensures a substantial cost savings per employee; saves valuable traveling time and costs; tailors the program to meet each company's needs; encourages a cooperative effort in problem solving; and brings together employees of similar backgrounds, needs, and interests. Our in-house training programs include: customer service, supervisory skills, management skills, leadership, strategic planning, security and loss control, statistical process control, manufacturing resource planning, shift workers, computer software training, scientific and technical writing, production and inventory control technology, and many others. Utah Law Enforcement Academy Program Administrator : S. Kent Paskins Weber State College has been sanctioned as an official training site for law enforcement classes by the Division of Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.), State of Utah. Our program is divided into two categories: • Category I-Basic Training for Peace Officers is designed for certification as a peace officer with full police powers. The course covers a six month training period with 449 actual class hours. Two classes consisting of 64 students are run each year. • Category II-Basic Training for Reserve, Correctional, or Special Function Officers fills requirements to become a jailer, a constable, a Protective Service Officer for the Utah Highway Patrol, a Special Function Officer at the Highway Patrol, Ports of Entry, or security personnel for business and industry. Training consists of 140 hours of class work covered in 12 weeks. Over 80 students enroll yearly in the four sessions offered. Conferences Associate Program Administrator: Vicki Smith The conference team plans and facilitates over 50 conferences each year for professional, business, government, high school, campus, and community organizations. With cooperation and utilization of the WSC Campus Life auxiliaries, the conference team hosts over 10,000 guests a year on the Weber State College campus. Selected 1988 conferences include: Boys State, Undergraduate Social Science Conference, Families Alive, Undergraduate Literature Conference, Northern Utah Women's Conference, Reading/Writing Conference, Expanding Your Horizons, Josten's Yearbook Camp, Secretarial Conference, and National Debate Institute West. Special Programs Special programs are designed to help students of all ages explore new interests. Current special programs include: Gymnastics, Run/Walk for Lifelong Learning, Country Western and Ballroom Dance, Writing for Publication, and Driver's Education. Community Services Director and Program Administrator: Ruth V. Knight HUD Housing Counselor: Rae Ann Garside Community Services seeks to determine and assist in the solution of a variety of problems identified by citizens and organizations. Youth Achievement Homes in Hooper and Willard for boys adjudicated as seriously delinquent by the First District Juvenile Court are managed by WSC DCE. Other community services performed by the Division include: Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Housing Counseling, Utah Navajo Development Council and Ute Tribe Teacher Training, and the Utah Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Program (Youth-in-Custody Behavioral Unit). All of these activities are federally funded which bring grants totaling over $500,000 to the College. Adult Student Services Program Administrator: Mary Jo LaTulippe The Division of Continuing Education recognizes the fact that there is a nationwide trend for adults to return to the college campus to pursue an education. Many adult students are entering college for the first time or are returning to the campus after an interruption of several years, and have special needs. The Adult Student Services Office was formed to address these needs. The Adult Student Services Office provides answers to thousands of questions including enrollment requirements, selection of courses, transferring credit from other colleges or universities, and financial aid.
