Show Secondary Education Composite Programs Information PROGRAM: SECONDARY EDUCATION CERTIFICATION PROGRAM General Requirements: Specific Requirements (see index). • Requirements for General Education (see index). • Admission and Retention Standards requirements for the School of Education. • The academic teaching major and teaching minor (referred to previously under Subject Specialization) must consist of not less than 45 and 24 quarter hours respectively, or a composite major of at least 68 hours. • The teaching major and teaching minor should be in subjects taught in Utah public secondary schools. Either the major or minor must be a subject which Utah secondary schools are required to teach (those marked with an asterisk do not satisfy this second requirement-see below). • The student preparing to teach in either junior or senior high schools will spend considerable time in both professional and academic specialization. Specific Requirements: • 39 credit hours for certification. • Education courses required (to be completed in sequence): Educ 195 (1), 300 (2), 301 (4), 303 (3), 305 (3), 462 (4), 463 (4), 495 (15), 499 (3). Support courses required: Commun HU102 (3); Chfam PD150 (5), Educ 365 (3). Teaching majors and minors in the social sciences must also take Educ 450 (3). TEACHING MAJORS AND MINORS The student's adviser will be a faculty member in the department of the student's academic (teaching) major. Advisement help should be sought as needed from a staff member in the student's academic (teaching) minor. The student should also select an adviser from the professional education staff to help in meeting requirements of the School of Education and the requirements for the Utah teaching certificate. Major and minor requirements are described in the catalog COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJORS In lieu of the major and minor, a candidate may elect a composite teaching major which consists of a minimum of sixty-nine hours of subjects in closely related fields. The Student's adviser will be a faculty member in the department of the student's composite teaching major. Advisement help should be sought as needed from a staff member in the student's academic (teaching) minor. The student should also select an adviser from the professional education staff to help in meeting requirements of the School of Education and the requirements for the Utah teaching certificate. PROGRAM: ART COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJOR BACHELOR DEGREE Students will be admitted to this program upon recommendation of the art faculty following a portfolio review during their sophomore year. A minor is not required. • Art majors must have a C or better in major courses. • Art majors must have an overall GPA of 3.00 or B. • 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above.) Specific Requirements (83 total credit hours): Foundation (19 credit hours—taken freshmen year): • Art 180 (3), (offered Autumn quarter.) • Drawing: Art 111 (4), 112 (4), (offered Autumn, Winter and Spring quarters). • Design: Art 116 (4), 117 (4), (offered Autumn, Winter and Spring quarters). • Core (17 credit hours): Art HU201 (3), HU202 (3) HU203 (3), 218 (3) and Photo 101 (5). Art majors who have completed the foundation and core are permitted to take the 300 level studio class without the 200 prerequisite (except ceramics, photography and visual communications). Students who have notcompleted the foundation and core and who wish to take specialized studio courses must take the 200 level studio course. • Additional Requirements (24 credit hours): Art 231 (3), 243 (3), 335 or 235 (3), 351 (3), Art 354 or 254 (3), 370 or 270 (3); one of the following: Art 322 or 222 (3), 323 or 223 (3), 324 or 224 (3); one of the following: Art 360 or 260 (3), 365 or 265 (3). (Art 351 must be completed pior to commencing student teaching or similar training.) • An additional 23 credit hours will be determined in consultation with the Department of Visual Arts chair so that an individualized program can be designed to meet the needs of each student and shall be completed after having sought and gained admittance to the program. • The student must have an emphasis in two of the following areas: ceramics, drawing, graphic design, illustration, jewelry, painting photography, printmaking, sculpture, weaving. • Support course required: Commun HU102 (3). PROGRAM: BILINGUAL/BICULTURAL COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJOR BACHELOR DEGREE General Requirements: • Specific Requirements (see index). • Requirements for General Education (see index). • Psych SS101 (5) in the Social Science area is recommended for Bilingual Bicultural Composite Teaching majors. • A minor is not required. • Achieve an overall 2.75 GPA and a demonstrated competence in English and a second language to be used in teaching. • 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). • Students obtaining a Bilingual/Bicultural Composite Teaching major must satisfy the School of Education Certification Program. These courses must include the following: Educ 195 (1), 300 (2), 301 (4), 303 (3), 305 (3), 462 (4), 463 (4), 495 (15), 499 (3). Specific Requirements: • Minimum of 70 credit hours. • The Bilingual/Bicultural Composite Teaching major consists of two teaching minors one of which must be a subject which Utah Secondary schools are required to teach. (Minimum of 25 hours each.) 158 Students planning to pursue the Bilingual/Bicultural Composite major should contact the Department of Teacher Education for advisement. PROGRAM: BIOLOGY COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJOR BACHELOR DEGREE General Requirements: • Specific Requirements (see index). • Requirements for General Education (see index). • Psych SS101 (5) in the Social Science area is recommended for Biology Composite Teaching majors. • A minor is not required. • Biology Composite Teaching majors must have a C or better in major courses. • Biology Composite Teaching majors must achieve an overall 2.75 GPA. • 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). Students obtaining a Biology Composite Teaching major must satisfy the School of Education Certification Program (see Teacher Education Program). These courses must include the following: Educ 195 (1), 300 (2), 301 (4), 303 (3), 305 (3), 462 (4), 463 (4), 495 (15), 499 (3). Specific Requirements: • Minimum of 69 credit hours in the biological sciences. • Biological Science courses required: Botany NS110 (5), 111 (2), 112 (5), and 362 (5); Micro NS205 (5) Zool NS160 (5), NS201 (5), NS211 (5), NS212 (5), 330 (5), and 381 (4); Botany 345 (5) or Zool 440 (4) or 445 (4) or 447 (4) or 448 (4); Botany 498 (2), 320 (5) or Zool 420 (5) or 421 (5). • Electives: Additional Biological Science courses needed to meet the state requirement of 69 credits should be discussed in advance with the adviser. Minimal support courses required (33 credit hours): Chem NSlll(5),NS112(5),NS113(5),orNS121(5),NS122(5), 123 (5); Commun HU102 (3); Geol NS111 (5) or 122 (5); Math 105 (5) or 106 (5); Phsx NS101 (5). NOTE: It is recommended that more advanced courses in mathematics, physics and chemistry be taken, especially if graduate studies are planned beyond the bachelor of science degree. These should be discussed in advance with the 259 adviser.
