14 Academic Standards Academic Standards The Weber State College academic standards policy exists to maintain academic standards at the College and to help students reach their academic potential. The minimum cumulative grade point average required at Weber State is C or 2.00. Students whose cumulative grade average is below the required C or 2.00 level will be placed on academic warning or academic probation as indicated below and will not be eligible to participate in certain college activities. (See Eligibility Standards.) Categories of probation are defined by grade point deficits below the total required for a C average. Any deficit is reported at the bottom of each student's report of grades. Academic Warning (1-13 minus points below a C average) Students on warning will receive written notification of their status. It is recommended that they visit with an academic adviser or counselor. Academic Probation (14 or more minus points) Performance resulting in 14 or more minus points places a student on probation. Probationary students should plan to work closely with a counselor until such time as they are taken off probation and returned to good standing. Academic Suspension Students on academic probation who fail to improve their grade point average will be suspended from the College. Suspension will be for a minimum of one calendar year. Readmission will be considered only in cases where the student can present to the Admissions Committee evidence which indicates a positive change in circumstances and suggests a high probability of future academic success. Academic Renewal Policy Provides an opportunity for students to have their grade point average recalculated, discounting those courses with a D or less which were earned ten years or more from the date of the petition. (See Petition for Academic Renewal for complete policy). Quarterly Academic Honors Students who complete 12 or more credit hours during a quarter and achieve at levels designated below will receive Certificates of Honor. A GPA of 3.50 to 3.99 represents Honors achievement. A GPA of 4.00 represents High Honors achievement. Certificates are automatically mailed at the end of each quarter to those students who qualify. 15 Graduation Requirements Graduation Location: Administration Building, Room 102 Telephone: 626-6740/6741 Weber State College grants the degrees of Master of Education, Master of Professional Accountancy, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Integrated Studies; and titles of Associate of Arts, Associate of Science and Associate of Applied Science; and awards Institutional Diplomas and Institutional Certificates. Application for Graduation A candidate for graduation should file an application for graduation, obtained at the Graduation Office, at least three quarters prior to the quarter the student plans to finish. Students who fail to apply prior to March 15 for Spring Commencement will automatically be moved to Summer Quarter for an evaluation and graduation. Applicants will receive a written report on their standing for graduation upon which to plan the work for their senior year. Students who complete degree requirements during any quarter of the academic year will receive their diploma after Spring Commencement. An official letter of completion signed and sealed by the Director of Graduation may be obtained on request for purposes of employment or promotion. The only exception to the above policy will be candidates for one year certificates. Applications for any award will not be considered during the last few weeks before Commencement, unless special permission is given by the Director of Graduation. A candidate for graduation must pay the graduation fee at the Cashier's Office at the time of application. For students to be admitted to candidacy for any degree or title, their academic record must show that they have satisfied the entrance requirements and that they can fulfill the requirements for graduation. No credit obtained prior to the time a student matriculates will be used toward graduation requirements unless approved by the Graduation Committee. The student must have cleared all College financial obligations in order to graduate. Honors at Graduation Candidates for graduation at Weber State College may receive honors in relation to their achievement in all their registered work according to the following policy: Summa Cum Laude The candidate's cumulative grade point average must rank in the top 3 percent of all candidates for a Bachelor's Degree in the school of their major. However, the candidates grade point average must be 3.90 or above. Magna Cum Laude -The candidate's grade point average must rank in the top 8 percent of all Bachelor Degree candidates from the school including those designated Summa Cum Laude and the grade point average must be 3.80 or higher. Cum Laude The candidate's cumulative grade point average must rank in the top 16 percent of all Bachelor Degree candidates from the school including those designated as Summa and Magna Cum Laude and the candidates grade point average must be 3.60 or higher. Associate Degree Candidates Those candidates for the Associate of Arts and the Associate of Science whose cumulative grade point average ranks in the top 5 percent of all candidates from each school and is 3.85 or higher will be awarded "High Honors". Those candidates whose grade point average is among the top 15 percent and 3.60 or higher will be awarded "Honors." Honors for the Commencement program are determined during spring quarter and do not reflect final grades for that quarter. The names of honor graduates are published in the Commencement program and elsewhere as the President may direct. Grade Requirements Students must attain an average grade point of at least 2.0 for all their registered work. Credit Restrictions Not more than 30 quarter hours of D grade credit may be applied toward graduation. The school or department, however, may reject any or all D grade work toward the major or minor requirements.
