Show 34 Student Affairs Student Social Standards Weber State College extends the privilege of attending school to those persons who meet entrance requirements, standards of health, character, and prior appropriate conduct. The student enters college by choice and is not required by law to attend. Students are subject to federal, state and local laws as well as College rules and regulations, and are not entitled to immunity or privileges before the law. Students found guilty of violations of College rules and regulations are subject to such disciplinary action as the College may consider appropriate. Appropriate Dress Appropriate dress is expected for the campus in all buildings. Use of Liquor -Weber State College does not permit the use of alcoholic beverages either on the campus or at College-sponsored functions off the campus. Any violation of this rule is subject to disciplinary action. Drug Abuse Possession or distribution of marijuana, LSD, narcotics or other illegal drugs on College-owned property except as expressly permitted by law will not be tolerated. Any violation of this rule will result in disciplinary action. Smoking Smoking is prohibited in all buildings on the campus except in designated areas. Provisions for Appea/-Students who have received disciplinary action for academic or social reasons will have the right to appeal their case as stated in the Student's Rights and Responsibilities document. Career Development and Services Center Location: Union Building, Room 280 Telephone: 626-6393 Purposes and Objectives The objective of the Center is to assist all students in formulating a career development program, starting at the earliest possible time that will permit them to put their education to work in a career field that will be both satisfying and rewarding on a lifetime basis. The Career Development and Services Center also provides services to student needing part-time employment through its Student Employment Center, and to alumni needing assistance in furthering and broadening their careers through counseling, job referrals, and updated career information. The Career Development and Services Center provides centralized and education oriented career development, work environment, and job placement programs. Career development is an important part of the educational resources available to all students at Weber State College. Career Planning Ideally, the career decision making process should begin as soon as a student enters college. Students are provided opportunities to talk with career counselors, join in self-exploration and career exploration classes and seminars, use audio visual facilities and career exploration modules, and avail themselves of other programs and personnel at the Center to increase their knowledge of occupations of interest or learn about new ones. Testing, computerized assessment and career exploration are also important tools used by the Center to help students evaluate and select tentative career goals, and correlate academic choices with career interest. The objective is to have students become their own experts in formulating career plans that will be compatible with their academic pursuits. This plan will then serve as a motivational factor while a student, and become a career direction after graduation. This kind of planning insures students maximum future employability. Cooperative Education Beginning with their second year, students should take advantage of the Center's facilities to further refine career plans through Cooperative Education classes and work environment experiences. Besides giving the student an opportunity to gain marketable work experience, they are also given the opportunity to test the reality of their career decisions, In preparation for the Co-op experience or entry into the job market, the Center provides on-going programs in personal job search plan development, communication skills, and interviewing skills and techniques. Finally, the Center provides students with the opportunity to interview with many employer representatives from business, industry, government, and educational institutions. These representatives are invited to campus and hosted by the Career Planning, Cooperative Education, and Placement Center for the express purpose of giving Weber State students the broadest and most direct access to the job market possible. Placement Through its professional staff, the Career Development and Services Center provides placement counseling and employee selection education for any student desiring career employment. Hundreds of national and local business, industry and public service agencies actively recruit through the Center each year. In addition, Utah State Job Service assistance is available to all students within the Center. The Career Development and Services Center maintains a career information library of current resource material and company information from firms and agencies as well as graduate school and scholarship information. A computerized tracking system is also on line to follow-up on graduates to learn more about their success or to assist in adjusting future career direction. 35 Student Affairs Counseling Center Location: Building 1, Room 125 Telephone: 626-6406 Purpose The purpose of the Counseling Center is to promote student development in emotional, social, educational and career areas. Services also are available to faculty and staff members. Occasionally students encounter circumstances that induce frustration, stress, and personal disruption. Effective strategies for coping with these situations and feelings facilitate emotional and educational growth. The Counseling Center provides group and individual programs to enhance development. Offerings The most direct service comes to students through some of the following offerings: Counseling: Individual Group Marital and Divorce Short-term Groups: Couples Communication Eating Disorders Migraine Headache Clinics Personal Loss Self-defeating Behaviors Workshops: Anxiety Management Assertiveness Training Career Exploration Math/Science Anxiety Stress Management Time Management Campus Outreach/Consultation Description The Counseling Center has a full-time, professional staff of five psychologists and one counselor who work from a wide variety of theoretical approaches. Any aspects of personal development noted above can be obtained by scheduling an appointment through the Center receptionist. Confidentiality All initial intake interviews and counseling sessions are kept strictly CONFIDENTIAL. Psychiatric Service A psychiatrist serves as a consultant to the Counseling Center and is available for limited psychiatric assistance through referral by and conjoint treatment with a member of the Counseling Center Staff. Disabled Student Services Location: Library, Room 86 Telephone: 626-6413 Services for Disabled Students at Weber State College were organized to coordinate academic support services for students with physical impairments. This office coordinates the following services: interpreting, note-taking, reading, counseling, career planning and placement, parking, tutoring, housing, wheelchair attendance, legal and medical assistance, access to TTY machine, Kurzwell reading machine, and other needs disabled students might have. Weber State College prohibits discrimination on the basis of handicap in accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Discrimination is prohibited in recruitment for admission, admission and treatment of students, housing, financial assistance, employment, counseling and placement service, health services, physical education and athletics, social organization, etc.. International Student Center Location: Social Science Building, Room 380 Telephone: 626-6028/6853 The International Student Center offers a variety of services to students from countries other than the United States. The purpose of this Center is to assist these students in becoming academically and personally successful at Weber State College. The following services are available at the International Student Center: Cultural Orientation offers newly-arrived students assistance with locating housing, obtaining utilities and other services, bridging culture gaps, coping with homesickness and adjusting to living in a new country. Academic Advisement is provided by trained peer-advisers with the goal of helping students learn to work with the complexities of the American system of higher education. These student-advisers provide help with the registration process, course selection and referral to academic advisers in the in-coming student's chosen major. English as a Second Language is provided by the ESL Program whose offices are located with the International Student Center. (See Index, ESL.) Social and Cultural Events designed to introduce international students to activities and scenery unique to the United States and the State of Utah are organized by the International Student Center. Personal Support in dealing with culture shock, homesickness, and the difficulties with adjusting to a new academic and social setting are provided in student discussion groups. Individual conversational support is provided by the Director of the Center and other Center staff. |
