Other courses listed will be offered as the need arises. 195. Orientation to Teacher Education (1) Provides exploratory experiences in both an elementary school and secondary school. Three hours of school visitation per week required. Orientation to the teacher education program included. 200. Social Studies Concepts for Elementary Teachers (4) Fundamental concepts from the social sciences commonly found in elementary social studies curriculum. Methods modeling and laboratoy experiences. 280. The Problem Solving Process and Structure of Media Centers (3) Analysis and operation of various levels of media centers using a systematic problem solving process. This course is made up of two modules; the problem solving process and the application of the process to solve organizational and management problem of various media centers. 292. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-6) In order to provide flexibility and to meet many different needs, a number of specific offerings are possible using this catalog number. When the number is used it will be accompanied by a brief and specific descriptive title. The specific title with the credit authorized for the particular offering will appear on the student transcript. 300. Interaction Laboratory for Teachers (3) Provides exposure to experiences intended to develop basic skills in personal interaction and adaptation to teaching. Includes the Interaction Laboratory. Prerequisite: Educ 195, or permission. 302. Basic Teaching Skills (4) Introductory modules of lesson planning/writing instructional objectives, educational psychology, classroom management, and field applications. A field experience is required. Recommended to be taken concurrently with Educ 304. 304. Media Production and Utilization (3) Contains modules of media production, equipment operation, introduction to computer literacy, and a materials management system. Recommended to be taken concurrently with Educ 302. 306. Reading Methods (6) Contains modules on the nature and instructional implications of reading, approaches to teaching reading, reading readiness, phonic and structural analysis skills, comprehension, and assessment. A field experience is required. Recommended to be taken concurrently with Educ 308. 308. Language Arts Methods (3) Contains modules on teaching dictionary skills, handwriting, spelling, listening and oral communication, and written communication. A field experience is required. Recommended to be taken concurrently with Educ 306. 310. Mathematics Methods (3) Contains modules on trends, methods, and materials appropriate for teaching mathematics, with emphasis on manipulatives and applications from educational psychology. A field experience is required. Recommended to be taken concurrently with Educ 312. 312. Science and Social Studies Methods (6) Contains modules emphasizing the organization of inquiry lessons, instructional methods in science, social studies methods, cultural pluralism, and school health problems. A field experience is required. Recommended to be taken concurrently with Educ 310. 314. Art-Music Methods/Management Skills (4) Contains modules on art and music methods in the elementary school, educational psychology, classroom management, and computer literacy. A field experience is required. 315. Mathematics in the Elementary School (3) Modern trends, methods and materials in the teaching of elementary school mathematics. Prerequisite: Educ 325, 326 or teaching experience. 317. Art in the Elementary School (3) (See Art 250) 319. Music in the Elementary School (3) (See Music 320) 320. Application of Microcomputers in Education (3) Provides students with methods of incorporating microcomputers into the field of education. Explores educational programs, educational characteristics of various computer languages, graphics, and animation. Discusses the various modes of using the microcomputer in education. 321. Teaching Reading (3) An overview of the developmental reading program in the elementary school with consideration given to lesson planning, methods, and materials for instruction. 322. Science in the Elementary School (3) An indepth emphasis on methods of teaching science. 323. Social Studies in the Elementary School (3) An indepth emphasis on methods of teaching social studies. 324. Basic Skills for Elementary Teachers (4) The introductory Modules in several of the teaching areas including language arts, art, music, audio-visual skills, tutoring, and educational psychology. 325. Elementary School Curriculum I (6) Emphasizes the methods of teaching reading in the elementary school. 326. Elementary School Curriculm II (6) Emphasizes the methods of teaching mathematics, science, and social studies. 333. Science Concepts for Elementary Teachers (4) A survey of general science concepts taught in the elementary school. 339. Teaching Reading in the Primary Grades (3) Analysis of developmental reading skills with emphasis on readiness for reading, phonic and structural analysis, word recognition, use of the basal reader, and reading for various purposes. 340. Word Recognition Skills (3) Understanding and teaching word recognition skills with emphasis on phonic analysis skills, structural analysis skills, dictionary skills, and spelling. 342. Kindergarten and Primary Education (3) The learning characteristics and learning needs of young children and how these are provided for in the program of the kindergarten and first grade. 343. Creative Processes in the Elementary School (3) Development of attitudes, methods and skills in creative teaching. 346. The Secondary School Student (3) Health, processes of adjustment, development of interests, attitudes and values of the adolescent. 350. Theoretical Foundations of Secondary Education (3) Human behaviors as they relate to teaching. Bi-weekly seminar may be required. Prerequisite: Educ 300. 360. Instructional Skills for Elementary Teachers (4) Developing the professional skills necessary to teach children at the elementary level. Contains Modules on lesson and unit planning, classroom management and discipline, and evaluation. 362. Utilization of Media for Health Occupation Majors. (2) Basic skills in use and production of audiovisual media for Health Occupation students. Lab fee required. 363. Instructional Skills for Secondary Teachers I (3) Basic concepts and techniques in instruction, and in the production and use of media materials. Lab fee required. Prerequisite: Educ 350. 364. Instructional Skills for Secondary Teachers II (4) Planning and implementing teaching strategies in the secondary schools. Prerequisite: Educ 363 or permission of instructor. 381. Skills and Technical Problems in Instructional Media: Materials Selection (2) Sources, methods and criteria for the selection of media in centers with varied service goals. Both print and non-print media are considered. 382. Skills and Technical Problems in Instructional Media: Cataloging (3) Introduction to systems of cataloging media materials for the organization of print and non-print collections. 383. Skills and Technical Problems in Instructional Media: Reference Services (2) Techniques in the evaluation and selection of reference media, and the organization of reference services for centers of various types. 131 Education Courses 410. The Role of the School in Cross Cultural Communication (3) Provides an understanding of cross cultural relationships as they relate to classrooms in the United States and develops skills for identifying and correcting problems of bias as found in curriculum, textbooks and other aspects of the school program. 411. Bilingual/Bicultural Education: Rationale and Models (3) Provides a knowledge base concerning the issues and rationale for bilingual education and presents various designs or models which may be used for successful implementation of a bilingual educational program. 412. Education and Minority Affairs (3) Examines the effects of governmental, social and economic issues which affect teaching and learning for students of minority groups. 413. Teaching the Culturally Different Student (3) Develops skills in designing curriculum and applying teaching strategies to meet the interests and abilities of students of differing ethnic or cultural groups. 414. Language Arts in a Bilingual Setting (3) Develops skills for planning and implementing teaching strategies to enhance the teaching of oral and written language for student with limited English-speaking proficiency. 438. Teaching Reading to Secondary Schools (3) Basic principles of reading instruction; nature and scope of the total reading program; methods, materials and organization of the developmental and corrective reading program in the secondary schools. 460. The Exceptional Child (3) An introduction to the understanding of children classed as exceptional for educational purposes. 462. Teaching Reading in the Content Areas (3) Methods and procedures in fundamental reading skills for secondary school content area classrooms. Emphasis will be on the acquisition, preparation and application of these reading skills through readings, seminars, and field experiences. 464. Teaching Remedial Mathematics (3) Diagnosis and remediation of learning problems in elementary school mathematics. Prerequisite: Educ 315. 465. Diagnosis of Learning Skills (3) Analysis and diagnosis of learning difficulties with an emphasis on reading problems. Prerequisite: Educ 321 and 340 or 325. 466. Teaching Remedial Reading (3) Principles and techniques of remediating reading problems. Prerequisite Educ 321 and 340 or Educ 325. 467. Evaluating Pupil Growth (3) Familiarization with the various means of assessing pupil growth. Recording and using evaluative data. 468. Behavioral Related Skills for Teachers (3) Developing understanding and skills for helping people in developmental and remedial learning processes. 469. Diagnostic Techniques for the Learning Disabled (3) Understanding the administration, scoring, interpretation, writing of diagnostic assessment reports, and making recommendations from instruments of intellectual functioning and brain impairment or dysfunction. 470. Learning in the Schools (3) Principles of learning and their application to the school situation. Prerequisite: Student teaching. 472. Simulation and Games (2 or 3) Instruction in the design and use of original simulations and games. Commonly offered in a workshop setting. Two hours of credit upon completion of the workshop and one additional hour for a personal project approved by the director. 473. Individualization of Instruction (3) Provides basic assumptions; principles and conditions, methods, and classroom organization and management for individualizing instruction. Usually offered in a workshop setting. 474. Managing Behaviors in the Classroom (3) Legal responsibilities, management and teaching techniques for teachers of the mildly and moderately handicapped student. 475. Aerospace Education (3) Concerned with knowledge, skills, attitudes and communication about aerospace activity, and the impact of air and space vehicles upon society. 476. Advanced Aerospace Education (3) Develops an understanding of the political, economic, social and educational implications of aerospace technology. 477. Practicum in Teaching Mathematics (5) Working with children having difficulties learning mathematics. Prerequisites: Educ 464, and instructor's consent. 478. Practicum in Reading (5) Working with children having difficulties learning to read. Prerequisites: Educ 465, 466, and instructor's written permission. 479. Advanced Practicum in Reading (5) Advanced work with children having difficulties learning to read. Prerequisites: Educ 478, and instructor's written permission. 482. Adult Education (3) A survey course in adult education with emphasis on philosophy, principles, and practices as evidenced in programs of various adult education organizations. Prerequisites: Professional education course work, teaching experience, or approval of the instructor. 483. Individually Prescribed Program (1-9) Designed primarily for teachers fulfilling recertification requirements or personal needs. 484. Practicum in Instructional Media Services (9) Supervised experience in an operating instructional media center. A minimum of two clock hours per day in actual on-sight activity is required. In addition to the field experience, four modules are included in the requirements for this course: oral activities, reading guidance, evaluation of IMC operation, and personnel supervision. Application for the practicum experience must be made at least one quarter in advance. Prerequisite: Educ 363 or its equivalent. 485. Supervision of Student Teachers (3) The cooperating teacher-student relationship and the factors and conditions that contribute to successful student teaching experiences. 487. Directed Experiences with Students (l) Directed experiences with elementary and secondary school students in cooperating schools. Students may register for one unit of credit per quarter for a maximum of three quarter hours. |
