Marketing Major Description Marketing majors specialize in coursework that deals with business activities involved in getting the right goods and services to the right customers at the right time, and the right place, and in the right way. Education The Marketing courses provide students a strong foundation in marketing theory and how to apply it. These courses prepare students to assume responsible positions in industry. Those desiring careers in marketing research or higher levels of corporate management are well prepared to enter graduate programs of their choice. Related Careers Careers in selling and sales management, marketing administration, buying, wholesaling, retailing, transportation, inventory management and warehousing, product management, marketing research and advertising are among the many alternatives available to Marketing majors. Professional Outlook Innumerable opportunities exist in industrial selling, consumer goods selling and retailing. Fewer, but often more rewarding opportunities, are also found in advertising, marketing research, and product management. Program: Marketing Major-Bachelor Degree College Requirements: Specific course requirements of the College (see index). Econ SS274 (5) or 430 (4) is recommended to satisfy the State Senate Bill requirement. Bachelor Degree General Education requirements (see index). A minor is not required. A 2.50 GPA is required for business core and major and minor courses. An overall College GPA of 2.00 is required. 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 or above). See School of Business and Economics Requirements section of the catalog. (Econ 301 is required in Business Core.) Major Requirements (minimum of 35 credit hours): Courses required (20 credit hours): Econ 302 (4), Mktg 420 (4), 440 (4), 470 (4), 499 (4). Courses to elect from (15 credit hours): Mktg 320 (4), 340 (4), 345 (4), 350 (4), 360 (4), 480 (1-5); Econ 303 (4), and 311 (3); Mgmt 350 (3) 468 with department approval (1-4). Program: Marketing Minor for Business and Non-business Majors Non-business majors (minimum of 28 credit hours): Required courses (16 credit hours): Mktg 301 (4), Acctng 201 (4), Econ 101 (5), 102 (3). Elective courses (12 credit hours): This program will be designed with a minor adviser and approved by the department chairperson prior to taking the courses. School of Business and Economics Majors: If a minor in Marketing is desired by a student majoring in the School of Business and Economics, the student must complete a minimum of fifteen credit hours. The hours will be selected with the counsel of a minor adviser and approved by the department chairperson prior to taking the courses. Finance Major Description After studying in the School's core courses about the various functions in organizations, the Finance major learns how to acquire, allocate, and control a firm's financial resources efficiently. Education A Finance graduate will be prepared to: 1) conduct detailed financial analyses; 2) relate the financial environment of an organization to the policies that organization will need for optimum returns; 3) select and analyze investment opportunities for both individuals and organizations. For those students desiring to pursue careers as analysts or consultants, a graduate degree is recommended. Those students desiring to take the Real Estate option will cover material required to take the examination for 121 Marketing & Finance salesperson licensing. The advanced real estate courses will provide students with increased analytical and conceptual ability to solve real estate problems. Professional Outlook Since money is the life-blood of every organization, the need for sound financial management will persist and with it the demand for financial majors. A degree in Finance is common among the various business backgrounds of the highest paid executives in the United States. The importance of expertise in real estate is increasing as our land and related resources approach full utilization. In order to compete effectively in this area individuals must place greater emphasis on real estate education and professionalism. Related Careers In addition to opportunities in financial departments of industrial firms, Finance majors find application for their skills in many other areas, such as banking, insurance, real estate, investment, and consumer credit. These courses should be taken in addition to program requirements for the Finance area of emphasis in order to satisfy typical graduate school entrance requirements. Program: Finance Minor for Business and Non-business Majors Non-business majors (minimum of 28 credit hours): Required courses (17 credit hours): Econ 101 (5); Acctg 201 (4); Fin 320 (4), 435 (4).
