Career Outlook Throughout the world there is a need for registered and practical nurses in hospitals, clinics, public health agencies, and mental health centers. At the Associate degree level, the nurse may work in staff positions in hospitals caring for patients, in the doctor's office and in some community agencies. The starting salary for registered nurses is approximately $15,500-$17,000 annually in the local areas. The starting salary for licensed practical nurses is approximately $13,500-$ 14,000 in the local area. Program: Practical Nursing Institutional Certificate (Weber State College Campus) General Requirements: Specific and General Education course requirements of the college, as outlined below. An overall GPA of 2.00 or C is required. 66 total credit hours are required. Specific Requirements: Minimum of 66 credit hours required for Practical Nursing program. Biomedical core or acceptable equivalent* required (must be taken in sequence): Hthsci 111 (5), 112 (5), 113 (5) (Core courses or the equivalent courses must be passed with a C grade or better). Nursing courses required (must be taken in sequence): Autumn: Nursng 101 (5), 102 (5) Winter: Nursng 111 (5), 112 (5), 114 (1) Spring: Nursng 121 (6), 122 (6). Support courses required (Must be completed with a C grade or better): Summer: Chfam 101 (3), 150 (5); Psych 101 (5) in the Social Science area; Micro 115 (4) in the Life Science area. *Acceptable equivalent: Zool 201 (5), Micro 111 (5), Chem 101 (5) and Phsx 101 (5). If students complete the acceptable equavalents of 20 hours Micro 115 is not required. Nursing Courses 101-102. Fundamentals of Nursing Care (10) Student develop fundamental skills and identify simple nursing problems related to the basic needs of people. Five lecture hours and three 5-hour labs a week. 111-112. Needs of Adults (10) Emphasis is placed on meeting the basic human needs of patients through an increased development of nursing skills based on an understanding of principles and facts relative to common pathological processes, diagnostic procedures, and specialized equipment. The nursing process is incorporated into theory and practice. Five lecture hours and two 8-hour labs a week. 114. Level 1, Basic Pharmacology (1) Biological factors affecting the action of drugs and related nursing considerations. Medication administration techniques are included. 121-122. Needs of the family (12) Emphasis is placed on meeting basic human needs of the family throughout the childbearing cycle and includes the care of children. Increased development of nursing skills is based on an understanding of principles and facts relative to these aspects of the life cycle. Six lecture hours and two 8-hour labs a week. 201-202. Needs of Adults (8) Concurrent theory and guided clinical practice are incorporated in developing a knowledge of principles related to the nursing care of clients with more complex health problems. Opportunities are provided for the student to use the nursing pro- cess in the care of patients with alteration in their basic needs. Emphasis is placed on four of the seven basic needs. Four lecture hours and two 8-hour labs a week. 211-212. Needs of Adults (8) Concurrent theory and guided clinical practice are incorporated in developing a knowledge of principles related to the nursing care of clients with more complex health problems. Opportunities are provided for the student to use the nursing process in the care of patients with alterations in their basic needs. Emphasis is placed on three of the seven basic needs. Three lecture hours and two 8-hour labs a week. 214. Emphasis is placed on the nursing process as it relates to the nurse's role in drug therapy. 221-222. Family Centered: 1-Needs of Maternal Child and Adolescents; 2-Emotional Needs of People (10) 1. Concurrent theory and guided clinical experience are planned to assist in the development of knowledge and skills in giving care to clients in a family-centered setting. The clients are identified as obstetric patients, children from birth to late adolescence and their families. 2. The needs and behaviors of psychiatric patients are explored as well as the roles and functions of the psychiatric nurse. The psychodynamics of basic psycho-pathological conditions are explained. Opportunities are provided for the student to utilize the nursing process in giving nursing care to the client with a psychiatric disorder. Four lecture hours and two 8-hour labs a week. 226. Basic Coronary Care (3) Emphasis is placed on the care and treatment of clients in coronary care units, with particular emphasis on nursing skills necessary to treat patients with arrhythmias. The class contains a basic introduction to blood gasses. 227. Intravenous Therapy (4) Pertinent background information and procedure for venipuncture, IV therapy maintenance, complications of IV therapy, prevention of complications, principles of pharmacology related to IV therapy, and the demonstration and practice of required skills. Upon successful completion,, LPN's will be certified by the State Board of Nursing to administer IV therapy. This course is also open to RN's who wish to update their skills in this area. 283. Directed Readings and Projects (15) (May be repeated for a total of five credits). 292. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs. (1-6) In order to provide flexibility and to meet many different needs, a number of specific offerings are possible using this catalog number. When the number is used it will be accompanied by a brief and specific descriptive title. The specific title with the credit authorized for the particular offering will appear on the student transcript. 299. Nursing Seminar (1) Current topics significant to the practice of nursing are discussed. Required for sophomore students. |
