Students are expected to obtain a background knowledge in leadership, philosophy, program ming, and administration. Skills (Aquatics, Arts and Crafts, Dance, Drama, Music, Nature and Outdoor Education, Sports, Social Activities, Safety and First Aid). Field Experience. Introduction to Dance (3) A survey course including the history and evolution of dance and critical appreciation for contemporary forms. 241. Dance Composition and Improvisation (2) Experience in experimental and construction patterns of movement to form a composition in dance. (Offered 1984-85 and alternate years). 247. Ballet, Intermediate (1) Classical ballet technique on an intermediate level, with an emphasis on performance. Prerequisite: Dance 147. 248. Jazz Dance, Intermediate (1) To provide the intermediate dance student with experience in jazz styles as they relate to technique, composition, performance, philosophy, and aesthetics. 249. Modern Dance, Intermediate (1) Modern dance technique on an intermediate level. Prerequisite: Dance 149. 251. Aerobic Dance, Intermediate (1) Intermediate techniques and performance of aerobic dance activities. Prerequisite: Dance 151 or consent of instructor. 271. Professional Activities (2) Basic skills, techniques and methods of folk, square and social dance. For physical education majors and minors. 289. Cooperative Work Experience (1-9) Open to all students in Dance who meet the minimum Cooperative Work Experience requirements of the department. The course objective for each student will be developed between the student, the department, and a suitable employer providing the opportuni- ty for an on-the-job experience. Evaluation of course participants will be shared between the employer, student and the department. Grade and amount of credit will be determined by the department. 291. Dance Preparation (1) Preparation and rehearsal of dance composition to be presented in concert. Prerequisite: Instructor approval. May be repeated for a maximum of 4 credit hours. 292. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-6) In order to provide flexibility and to meet many different needs, a number of specific offerings are possible using this catalog number. When the number is used it will be accompanied by a brief and specific description title. This specific title with the credit authorized for the particular offering will appear on the student transcript. 330. Techniques and Materials for Teaching Folk, Square, and Social Dance (2) Methods, teaching techniques, and practical experience in teaching folk, square, and social dance. Prerequisite: Dance 146 and 152, or 271; PE 360. 332. Techniques and Materials for Teaching Modern Dance (2) Methods, teaching techniques, and practical experience in teaching modern dance. Prerequisites: Dance 149, 150 or PE 271. 340. Dance Production (2) A practical application of principles which serve the presentation of dance. The course deals with a choreographic problem including staging, lighting, costumes and movement. Prerequisites: Instructor approval. 349. Modern Dance, Advanced (1) Exercises and activities to develop strength, flexibility, endurance, and technical dance skill. Prerequisite: Dance 150. May be repeated for a maximum of 4 credit hours with instructor approval. 386. Field Experience (2) A course designed to provide opportunities for students to gain practical experience in the field by assisting in the activities of community agencies, schools, and the college. Credit is determined by the quality of the experience and the hours of time required. Registration for the course requires prior approval of the instructor and the cooperating agency. It cannot be repeated for credit in the same area of concentration. Prerequisite: Instructors approval. 480. Independent Study (1-5) Individual work or work in small groups by arrangement in special topics not included in the announced course offerings. Prerequisite: Approval of instructor. 489. Cooperative Work Experience (1-9) A continuation of Dance 289 Cooperative Work Experience. 491. Advanced Dance Preparation (2) Preparation and rehearsal of dance composition to be presented in concert. Prerequisite: Instructor approval. May be repeated for a maximum of 4 credit hours. 492. Personal Health (Physical Problems) (2) Will concentrate on self appraisal with an emphasis on mental/emotional health as related to the following topics: Organic Efficiency, Nutrition and Weight Control, Health Care Delivery Systems, Basic Life Saving Techniques. 102. Personal Health (Social Problems) (2) Will concentrate on self appraisal with an emphasis on mental/emotional health as related to the following topics: Mind-altering Substances, Birth Defects, Cancer, Communicable Disease. 103. Personal Health (Family' Problems) (2) Will concentrate on self appraisal with an emphasis on mental/emotional health as related to the following topics: Family Health and Human Sexuality, Ecological Health, Consumer Health, Death and Dying. PD111. Stress Management (1) A course designed to provide knowledge and physical skill in tension reducing techniques through exercise, deep breathing, and relaxation. PD200. First Aid (3) Emergency treatment for various types of injuries. Course leads to Red Cross Advanced First Aid Certificate. PD270. Consumer Health (3) Knowledge and skills relating to consumption of health products and services, including advertising and health, quackerey, death, and health, economics of health care, etc. 289.
