Show 1. MERMAID FANTASY On the starlit strand of the silver sea the mermaids danced in the moonlight. A Mermaid Princess, a beautiful being, part maiden, part sea-creature, lies on the dark sand and weeps; for she and her maids can not dance as do the Sea Nymphs, who have such slim, graceful feet. With the coming of dawn and the sunbeams, the Mermaid hides her face that none may see her grief. Sea Nymphs, dancing on the sands to greet the dawn, invite the sorrowing Princess to dance with them. She tries but fails. Of what use is a lustrous, silver tail when one longs for feet? As if some kind spirit had heard the longing and sent them, a host of rainbow fairies come to weave a charm about the Mermaid. While she is yet under the spell, the bright, white-tipped Waves steal away her scales. And then-O, then!-she dances in wild ecstasy. She discovers too, that she can transform ail the other mermaids, and in exultation they dance away on the waves.
