Show Front entrance Built of tan brick with terra cotta trim, the entrance features vertical bands of metal frame windows separated by brick pilasters (projecting pillars). Spandrels (triangular columns) reveal decorative masonry with the geometric Art Deco character stressing verticals and diagonals in the corbelling (overlapping bricks). Top spandrels and pilasters are terminated by cast terra cotta trim reflecting the undulations of the wall plane below. Notice the geo-floral motifs on the vertical spandrels. Each of the four entrance doors has a geometric-patterned metal grill transom, shaped by the brickwork. The original exterior lamps reflect Art Deco designs. The entrance of the building is further accented with the raised level and monumental stair. Surface mounting of the door hinges exaggerates the detail. The door hardware is not mortised or recessed; it's all surface mounted, even the connections of the push and pull bars. Vestibule The ceiling in the vestibule is an extension of the exterior detail. The exterior terra cotta details and all their exaggeration is refined in various colors in an interior medium, including gilding on the ceiling. The carved relief over plaques on both side walls continues the detail and utilizes again the stylized floral motif. The ceiling lights here are very ornate. Being more than just light fixtures, they have a tendency to be decoration, created by the new machine design. All the detail is a stylized repeat in new materials of the exterior detail. Here in the vestibule marble is seen for the first time. Notice the continuing simpler modification of the exterior detail, especially in the less detailed window above the door: it is the same shape but lacks the metal grill. Even the jamb above the door is less elegant with still a hint of the ornate exterior. As you enter these doors, touch the medallions on top of the marble balustrades and balustrades themselves. They are the main focal point at the time of entrance. From now on the detail and ornamentation are diminished in the classroom areas. |
