Show Auditorium Foyer Extensive ornamentation here indicates an important area. Marble panels on the walls are book-matched; that is, their edges have the same pattern just like a book where the pages join. Marble fluting above the panels will be copied in walnut inside the auditorium. Painted plaster friezes decorate the wall just below the ceiling, and the same floral relief seen above the bookstore window in the rotunda is found here above the trophy cases and above the ticket window. Marble columns are not flat; additional marble builds a raised portion which steps up the surface. The area above the gym balcony doors is also stepped, a typical Art Deco form. The entrance doors are walnut with inlaid metal detailing which brings inside a motif from the main entrance. Carved plaster floral decorations above the doors are not in the original pastel colors, but were repainted recently. Notice that even the locks and door pulls are ornate. Auditorium The crowning glory of Ogden High School is this magnificent auditorium. Everywhere, details are brought from other parts of the building and repeated here in different materials. The marble fluting above the paneling in the hall is repeated in walnut atop matched walnut panels around these walls. These details are similar to the brick soldier courses (bricks set vertically on edge) below each window on the exterior. Attention is paid to the raised plaster detailing of the air vents, rather than installing them flush to the walls. This same detail surrounds the light fixtures under the balcony and on the main ceiling. The original wooden seatbacks were recently refinished and the leather seats completely replaced, retaining the style exactly. Ornate end panels on each row repeat the soldier course design of exterior brickwork, here in columns. The procenium arch and painted motifs on the side walls were cleaned after the fire backstage in 1970. The sunburst pattern and color gradations across the arch are typical Art Deco, while the exterior roofline is reflected in the fanning of the ceiling design. Moorish patterns were utilized in the wall panels above the forward exit doors and herringbone lines carry down into the doors. These panels have not only the gold leaf from the vestibule, but add silver and bronze gilding in the sunburst where the wall and ceiling connect. On the side wall Art Deco's most famous motif is featured, a large winged parabolic curve called the streamline. The edge of the stage is curved, another Art Deco characteristic. The balcony railing done in metal tubing carries the Art Deco curve and straight line. Even the balcony entrances have the stepped top and decorative edges familiar to this style. |
