Show Congratulations Extended On Fiftieth Anniversary Friends are congratulating Dr. Ezra C. Rich upon the fiftieth anniversary of his starting the practice of medicine in Ogden. June 1 marked the half century attainment. It was back in 1894 that he joined his brother, Dr. Edward I. Rich, in partnership and practiced with him many years before going into practice with his son, Dr. Clark L. Rich. Dr. Ezra C. Rich was born in Paris, Idaho, August 18, 1864, a son of Mary Ann Phelps and Charles Coulson Rich, pioneers of Nauvoo, 111., who also helped to settle Salt Lake City, San Bernardino, Calif., and Paris Idaho. Dr. Rich made his first trip to Utah when he was nine years old. He came through Ogden canyon on the road that now passes his home in Valhalla. He saw his first railroad train at Riverdale that summer. Several years later he attended the University of Utah, which was then the University of Deseret, located at First North and Second West, Salt Lake City, studying under the late Dr. John R. Parks. He later fulfilled a mission for the L. D. S. church in the British Isles and presided over the Welsh mission for one year. Upon his return, he joined his brother, Edward, at Jefferson Medical college, Philadelphia, and was graduated in 1894. He later took post graduate work in surgery at Mayo clinic, Rochester, Minn., and at other clinics as well as in Vienna. In 1892 Dr. Rich was married to Annie Low of Providence, Utah, in the Logan L. D. S. temple. She died in March, 1941. They were the parents of three daughters, Gladys Rich of Ogden, Mrs. C. E. Wright, Salt Lake City, and Mrs. Gilbert D. Moyle of Pocatello, Idaho, and one son, Dr. Clark L. Rich of Ogden. Dr. Rich gave the first anti toxin for diphtheria in Weber county and the first blood transfusion. He also performed the second appendectomy and the first Caesarian, stomach and thyroid operations in Ogden. Starting his practice in the horse and buggy days, he was one of the first to drive an automobile in Weber county. It was an Oldsmobile. His nephew, Major Junior Edward Rich recently took him for an airplane tour over his childhood home in Bear Lake county, Idaho. Dr. Rich recently retired from active practice, but is still called in for consultation on serious cases. He is a charter member of the American College of Surgeons and recently presided at a district convention of the organization held in Salt Lake City. He is also a member of the chamber of commerce and of the Ogden Rotary club. He resides with his daughter, Gladys Rich, music instrumentalist and composer, during the winter months in Los Angeles and spends the summer months at his home in Valhalla, Ogden canyon. |
