Show Scout Center Dedicated And Honors Conferred Sept 15 1944 Against a backdrop of the great heights of Mt. Ogden, the Wm. H. (Harry) Shearman training center for scouters was dedicated Thursday evening at the annual meeting of the Ogden area council, Boy Scouts of America. Judge J. A. Howell eulogized the memory and the good works in scout and civic life of Mr. Shearman. The gift was accepted by President David S. Romney for the council. Mrs. Williemine Kiesel Shearman responded briefly and talked of her hopes for the good the gift will do. It is estimated the center will train from 150 to 200 men per year to better do scouting. The dedicatory prayer was offered by Stanley Robins, manager of the Fred J. Kiesel estate. Trees Presented Two planted trees were presented to the center on behalf of two former scouts who lost their lives in the war. Gus L. Becker presented a tree in honor of Major Floyd Pell, Troop 6, given by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Pell, and Francis A. Child presented a tree in honor of Pvt. Samuel Wayne Dye, Troop 13, presented by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel G. Dye. Miss Frances McCready gave two trees in honor of Fred W. Kiesel and W. H. Shearman. Mrs. Shearman gave a tree in honor of Joseph Singleton, who lost his life in defense of this nation. Woods New President At the business portion of the meeting, C. N. Woods, former forester, Region 4, was elected president of the council for the year 1945. Those elected vice presidents are Boyd E. Nelson, the Rev. W. P. Whittemore, Hervin Bunderson, G. Harold Holt, John P. Holmgren, Joseph J. Cutler, Gilbert Francis. Treasurer for the year 1945 is Dr. George Stewart. The following men were elected as national representatives for the council C. N. Woods, Dr. George Stewart and George H. Lowe. Trustees for 1945 are as follows C. N. Woods, Boyd E. Nelson, Dr. George Stewart, David S. Romney, Gilbert Francis, G. H. Holt, Heri vin Bunderson, R. R. Dean, H. Aldous Dixon, the Rev. W. P. Whittemore, the Rev. W. J. Giroux and C. I. Canfield. Executive Board The following men were elected to the executive board for a three year term, ending August 31, 1947; C. G. Cowley, Dr. R. L. Draper, Hal Armstrong, Dr. Keith Stratford, Reed W. Bailey, Orson M. Slack, H. G. Havenor, David J. Wilson, Ralph C. Duvall, Leo M. Loll. A vote of thanks was offered the following men who retire from the executive board this year O. H. Peteren, A. R. Croft, A. B. Foulger, J. T. Young, and W. A. Budge. James Jensen of Brigham City and Sherman S. Barton of Ogden were presented with the silver beaver award for distinguished service to boyhood, scouting highest honor to volunteer scouters. Pin Presented David S. Romney was given a vote of thanks for his work during the past year and regrets were expressed that the press of business and civic leadership made it necessary fo rhim to retire as president. He was presented with a past president's pin and a scout statuette. A large group of scouters and other citizens attended the meeting. The invocation was offered by Vice President Hervin Bunderson of Brigham City. The benediction was by the Rev. George H. Argyle, rector of the Church of the Good Shepherd. |
