Show SWEDISH LEGION JOINS FINNS TO CRUSH SOVIETSBy HAROLD PETERSCOPENHAGEN, Denmark, Jan. 31 UP Finnish ski troops, reinforced by Swedish and other foreign volunteers, have smashed into Russia's 54th infantry division in a flying wedge offensive which promised to result in a victory of considerable importance, reports from the north-central front said today.Dispatches asserted that several hundred Russians had been killed in the first phase of the attack and that the Finns had taken several armored cars and guns along with other material.68, 000 Men AvailableIt was reported the Russians, with the 54th as the main body, numbered about 22, 000 men.The Finns, usually heavily outnumbered, were said to have this time 68, 000 men available for their attack.Fighing centered opposite Raesti, north of Kuhmo and south of Suomussalmi, the front on which the Finns had won their biggest victories of the war.The Finns, with their Swedish and other volunteers, smashed into the Russians in two main bodies, striking obliquely toward a central point and thus forming the flying wedge. |
