Oct 7 - 57 TWA Jet Plane Deseret News Sets New Mark LONDON (UP) - A Trans World Airlines Super Constellation “Jetstream” touched down at London airport Monday after a non-stop flight over the North Pole from Los Angeles in a record 17 hours 11 minutes. The time was a new record for the 5,500-mile journey. It knocked one hour and 21 minutes off the previous best time set up last week. On board the airliner were 40 passengers and a crew of 11. Captain Gordon Granger of Los Angeles, who established an east to west record on the polar route on Tuesday, was at the controls. Strong tail winds over the Atlantic helped the giant airliner on its nonstop flight. But for poor visibility at London airport the airliner would have touched down forty-five minutes earlier, a spokesman for TWA said. “The pilot radioed that he was over London at 10:42 a.m. (3:42 a.m. MST) which was 16 hours 24 minutes after taking off from Los Angeles. But because of fog conditions he had to circle before being granted permission to land. Granger is the airline’s director of flight operations in Europe.
