Tribune Dec 7 - 57 Girl, 17, Hails School in New Zealand Carolyn Tanner, 17, was back in Salt Lake City Friday with an eternal affection for New Zealand where she'd been a school girl for six and a half months. Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Obert C. Tanner, 3501 S. 21st East, she was sent to New Zealand by the American Field Service last May. As a Nek Zealand school girl, She submitted to short tresses, a "hideous" black jumper and long black stockings. Even so, the black jumper is back in the United States with her—part of wonderful memories of the land "down under." She lived with a "wonderful" family in Auckland. There were two daughters in the family, 17 and 16, and three smaller children. New Zealand school work "is tough." She battled through English literature, German, geography, modern history. But she learned how to study. If1 she found herself wondering at her schoolmates academic proficiency, she excelled when it came to creative assignments such as essays. This may have resulted, she observed, from her American schooling, under much less discipline. No co-education in New Zealand schools. Even so, Carolyn did not find herself wanting in dates. "I guess they just considered me a novelty," she said modestly. New Zealand boys are nice, she said. She and dates took long walks together. They sat and did much talking. The dates had no cars or expensive clothes, but they were sincere. She'll go to Olympus High School for half day sessions until the beginning of next semester. She'll go to school full time in the spring and graduate with the Class of 1958.
