Back to Old Dobbin! No motorist who pays the bills needs to be told it costs a lot of money to own and operate an automobile. But not many, we imagine, realize just how much it does cost In the aggregate for all motorists in the United States. Harry N. Rogan of the Automobile Club of Michigan says it costs the average motorist $1.65 a day for the privilege of owning a car (even if it sits in the garage all day) plus about 3 ½ cents a mile to operate it. Cost varies according to where the motorist lives, the kind of car he drives and how often he trades it in. But the average new car owner trades every three years and drives about 10,000 miles a year. It costs him $477 a year for depreciation, $104 for insurance (not including collision) and $21 for license fees—total $602 a year. If he drives 10,000 miles at 3% cents a mile that's another $350 which makes nearly $1,000 a year for his car ownership privilege. No wonder Rogan said the total bill for the American motorist is 45 billion dollars a year—which doesn't include trucks, buses or government-owned vehicles.
