Show 16 Graduation Requirements Requirements for Bachelor Degrees Minimum Requirements A candidate for graduation with a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Integrated Studies degree must have completed a minimum of 183 credits. Upper Division Requirement A minimum of 60 credits of upper division work. Major Requirements Major programs which require a minor will consist of not fewer than 40 and not more than 60 credits in the major field, major programs without a minor shall consist of not more than 85 credits in the major field. Minor Requirements A minor is a program of study generally selected to complement and strengthen a student's major and/or enrich the student's overall educational program. Some bachelor degree programs do not require a minor. See your major program of study outline to determine if a minor is required. Change in Graduation Requirements Students normally are held to the requirements outlined in the catalog published six years before the year of their graduation. Where there is written agreement between a department chairperson and a student, graduation requirements within a student's major or minor may be met by completing the requirements outlined in any catalog published more recently than the one under which they were admitted. With the approval of the Graduation Office a student may also complete the specific and general education requirements by following the requirements outlined in a more recent catalog. Residence Requirement A candidate for the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Integrated Studies Degree must have a minimum of 45 credits in residence at Weber State College and be registered at the College during at least one quarter following the last Commencement prior to graduation. Foreign Language Requirement A candidate for a Bachelor of Arts degree must complete 24 credits, or the equivalent, in one or more approved foreign languages. A maximum of 15 college credits from high school may count toward filling the foreign language requirement, provided the student can pass an examination to demonstrate proficiency in the subject. (For a list of examinations see the Foreign Language Department in this catalog). Transfer credit from another institution will be recognized without an examination. School or Department Requirements Further information concerning specific courses will be provided under the discussion of school or department requirements and instructions. Candidates for graduation in the School of Education must meet the minimum requirements as outlined by the Utah State Board of Education for certification of elementary and secondary teachers. Specific Requirements All candidates must include in the 183 credits required for graduation the following: Credits Engl 101, 102 8 Health 101 or 102 or 103 2 Physical Education activities 3 (Courses 1-165: Three different areas required.) The State Requirement in American History, Government and Economics may be satisfied by any of the following: Completing one of the following courses: Econ 274, or 430; Hist 170 or 120 and 121 or 420; Polsci 110; Philos 320. (Econ 274; Hist 120, 121, 170; Polsci 110; and Philos 320 may also be applied to general education requirements.) Presenting advanced placement credit in American History or suitable transfer courses from other institutions. Passing a special examination administered before the end of the second week of each quarter under the direction of the Chairman, Department of History. Mathematics Competency -satisfied by having either of the following: A predicted GPA in mathematics of 2.0 or better. (Based on high school mathematics grades combined with ACT scores.) By achieving a score of 17 or above on the special ACT math proficiency exam available through the WSC Testing Center. Note-It is recommended that students complete this requirement early in their college careers to assist them in other academic areas. Students may prepare themselves to meet this requirement by self-study, tutoring or courses which teach mathematics concepts. General Education Area Requirements The General Education Program described in the following sections is required of all students who receive a bachelor degree from Weber State College. 17 Graduation Requirements To provide the broadest possible background in general education the selection of courses should depend upon the high school preparation. The student who has done well in a high school course in a given field should not select a course that might repeat essentially the same subject matter. Humanities Area Bachelor of Arts: Select 15 credit hours from at least 4 groups. Bachelor of Science: Select 9 credit hours from at least 2 groups. Bachelor of Integrated Studies: Select 12 credit hours from at least 3 groups. One literature course is required for all three degrees.
