Show 128 Elementary Education Program: Teaching of Reading Minor General Requirements: Students planning to pursue this reading program should contact the reading instructor in the School of Education. An overall GPA of 2.50 is required. Specific Requirements: Minimum of 26 credit hours for Reading minors. Education courses required: Educ 321 (3), 340 (3), 459 (3), 465 (3), 466 (3), 478* (5). Support courses required: Commun 211 (2) or Engl 381 (3) or Engl 383 (3). At least two of the following: Engl 104 (2) or 107 (2); Engl 330 (3) or 331 (3); Commun 107 (3) or 207 (3); Educ 460 (3), 469 (3). Students are encouraged to seek the Resource Endorsement along with this minor. *The instructor's written permission is required for registration in this course. Program: Resource Endorsement General Requirements: Students in the Teaching of Reading program can earn the Resource Endorsement from the Utah State Office of Education by completing additional course work in consultation with their adviser. Other Elementary and Secondary Education majors must complete all of the courses outlined below. This endorsement qualifies the holder as a resource teacher to be employed in this field at any level from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Specific Requirements: Minimum of 40 credit hours in Education courses are required. Education courses required: Educ 321 (3) and 340 (3), or 325 (6); 459 (3), 460 (3), 464 (3), 465 (3), 466 (3), 469 (3),477 (5), 478 (5), 479 (5). The requirements for the Resource Endorsement may change as the program is revised to meet the needs of the employing districts and state certification requirements. Cordell Perkes Location: Education Building, Room 224 Telephone: 626-6269 Students preparing to teach in first through sixth grade in the elementary schools, major in Elementary Education and will graduate from the School of Education. Elementary Education majors may have one or more content areas of specialization or a teaching minor, which permits the student to teach the minor through ninth grade. Students preparing to teach in preschool programs or kindergarten through third grade select the Early Childhood major. This program is described under the Department of Child and Family Studies. The Director of Advisement in Teacher Education and faculty members from the Department of Elementary Education are available to advise each prospective teacher. A program study guide is available from Elementary faculty members and from the offices in Rooms 230 and 224 in the Education Building. It is to the student's advantage to begin their program plan early. Program: Elementary Education Major Bachelor Degree General Requirements: Specific course requirements of the college (see index). Bachelor Degree General Education requirements (see index). One 36-hour, two 18-hour, three 12-hour content area specializations, or a teaching minor and one 12-hour content area specialization is required. Satisfy the admission requirements for Teacher Education. Elementary Education majors must have a GPA of 2.50 or higher in all college work and in professional education courses. 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). Specific Requirements: Support courses required: Commun 102 (3), or 307 (3), or equivalent. Math 108 (4), 109 (4). Educ 200 (4), 333 (4), 460 (4). Engl 330 (3), juniors and seniors only. Content Areas/Minor specialization required: One 36-hour content area specialization, or Two 18-hour content area specializations, or Three 12-hour content area specializations, or A teaching minor and one 12-hour content area specialization. Electives It is recommended that electives be selected from Education courses and academic areas taught in the elementary school. Department of Secondary Education Chairman: Harley K. Adamson Location: Education Building, Room 224 Telephone: 626-6269 The student preparing to teach in either junior or senior high schools will spend considerable time in both professional and academic specialization. Program: Secondary Education Certification Program General Requirements: Admission and Retention Standards for the School of Education. The academic Teaching major and Teaching minor (referred to previously under Subject Specialization) must consist of not less than 45 and 24 quarter hours respectively, or a composite major of at least 69 hours. The Teaching major and minor should be in subjects taught in Utah public secondary schools. Either the major or minor must be a subject which Utah secondary schools are required to teach (those marked with an asterisk do not satisfy this second requirement-see below). Composite Teaching Majors In lieu of the major and minor, a candidate may elect a composite teaching major which consists of a minimum of sixty-nine hours of subjects in closely related fields. (See Composite and Interdepartmental Programs for requirements.) Advisement help should be sought as needed from a staff member in the student's academic (teaching) minor. The student should select an adviser from the professional education staff to help in meeting requirements of the School of Education and the requirements for the Utah teaching certificate. Specific Requirements: 37 credit hours for certification. Education courses required (to be completed in sequence): Educ 195 (1), 300 (3), 350 (3), 363 (3), 462 (3), 364 (4), 495 (15), 499 (5). Support courses required: Commun 102 (3) or its equivalent. Teaching majors and minors in the social sciences must also take Educ 450 (3). Students may elect to take only twelve hours of student teaching by registering for Educ 457. In that case the Modules listed for Educ 495 must be completed at some other time (Preferable prior to student teaching). Permission of the department chairperson is required for this option. Students seeking secondary teaching certificates are encouraged to include Psych SS 101 and Comis PD 101 among the courses selected to meet General Education requirements. |
