Show 134 Child & Family Studies Program: Early Childhood Education Major Bachelor Degree General Requirements: Specific requirements of the college (see index). Bachelor Degree General Education requirements (see index). Psych SS101 (5) and Hist SS107 (5) in the Social Science area and Human Development PD150 in the Personal Development area are recommended. A minor is not required. Early Childhood Education majors must have a B or better in major course areas. Early Childhood Education majors must achieve an overall 2.5 GPA. 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses number 300 and above). Specific Requirements: One 20-credit hour content area in an adviser-approved subject matter area or two 10-credit hour content areas in adviser-approved subject matter areas. Child and Family Studies courses required (40 credit hours): 150 (5), 256 (4), 257 (3), 360 (3), 362 (4), 364 (3), 371 (3), 372 (6), 451 (3) or 310 (5), 492 (1). School of Education Certification Program requirements (45 credit hours): Educ 195 (1), 300 (3), 302 (4), 304 (3), 339 (3), 308 (3), 310 (3), 312 (6), 314 (4). 488 (15). Program: Family Studies Major Bachelor Degree Emphases: Family Relations; Food & Nutrition; Consumer Education; Clothing & Textiles General Requirements: Specific course requirements of the college (see index). Bachelor Degree General Education requirements (see index). In lieu of a minor, an emphasis of 20 hours outside the Department of Child and Familiy Studies, approved by the department adviser. Family Studies majors must have a "C" or better in major courses. An overall GPA of 2.00 or C is required. 183 total hours are required for this Degree. 60 of the 183 hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 or above). A total of 60 hours consititutes this major with a minimum of 40 hours within the Department of Child and Family Studies. Specific Requirements: Core Child and Family courses required for each of the four emphases listed below: 140 (4), 150 (5), 299B (2-4), 340 (4), 245 (4), 499B (2-4). Chfam 140 and 150 may be taken to fill the General Education Personal Development area. Choose from one of the following emphases within the Family Studies major: Family Relations Emphasis: Chfam 101 (3) or 310 (5), 110 (3) or 115 (3), 315 (3), 364 (3), 440 (4), 465 (4), 483 (2-4), or 486 (2-4), 499B (4). Additional hours to be arranged with department adviser according to student goals. Family Relations combines well with other areas of study across campus or it can be designed to allow a student to study within one or all of the four areas of the department. Please see adviser. Foods and Nutrition Emphasis: Chfam 101 (3), 204 (5), 315 (3), 316 (3), 335 (3), 402 (1-6), 460 (9). General Education classes stongly advised: Chem 111, 112, 113 (15); Human Physiology 201 (5); Micro 111 (5); Econ 101 (5). Additional courses to be arranged with department advisers according to student goals. Excellent training for professionals in business, food industries, and institutions. Consumer Education Emphasis: Chfam 110 (3), 115 (3), 204 (5), 315 (3), 316 (3), 335 (3), and other hours as specified by department adviser; i.e., readings and related courses. Training for professionals in credit bureaus, family financial centers, family services, extension service specialists and home economists. Clothing & Textiles Emphasis: Chfam 130 (3), 133 (1-6), 204 (5), 230 (4), 235 (5), 315 (3), 330 (1-6), 335 (3) and other hours as specified by departmental adviser; i.e., practicums, readings, related courses inside and outside of department. Program: Child and Family Studies Departmental Honors General Requirements: Enroll in the General Honors Program and complete 10 hours of General Honors courses. Maintain a grade of B or better in all Child and Family Studies courses. Fulfill the requirements for the Child Development major, Early Childhood Education, or one of the Family Studies major Options. Specific Requirements: Emphasis I In fulfilling a Child and Family Studies Honors major, complete at least 20 hours of courses on an honors basis. The above 20 hours should include at least 2 hours in Chfam 486 taken as Child and Family Honors Practicum. The student may earn Child and Family Honors credit in any Child and Family Studies course numbered 200 and above. 135 Child & Family Studies Permission from the department chair should be sought before registering in a course for honors credit. A written agreement should be reached with the appropriate professor concerning the work expected for honors credit. Emphasis II In fulfilling a Child and Fmily Studies Honors major, complete at least 12 hours of courses on a honors basis. Two of the above hours should be taken as Chfam 486 Child and Family Honors Practicum. In addition to the above hours, complete at least 6 to 9 hours in Honors 499, Honors Senior Project. The purpose of this stipulation is to provide an opportunity for the student to do a research project of quality to be presented to the faculty or to a professional meeting. The student is free to switch emphases with the consent of his major adviser. He may change any course selected for honors to non-honors status within the first five weeks of the quarter. Program: Child Development Minor General Requirements: An overall GPA of 2.00 or C is required. Specific Requirements: Minimum of 24 credit hours. Child Development Minor Emphases (select one): Early Childhood: Chfam 150 (5), 256 (4), 360 (3), 362 (4), 371 (3), 372 (6), and an additional three credit hours adviser approved. Middle Childhood/Adolescence: Chfam 150 (5), 257 (3), 286 (4), 360 (3), 364 (3), 450 (3), 492 (1), and an additional adviser approved two hours. Parenting: Chfam 150 (5), 255 (3), 256 (4), 257 (3), 286 (4), 450 (3), and an additional adviser approved two hours. Program: Family Relations Minor, Family Education Teaching Minor General Requirements: An overall GPA of 2.00 or C is required. Secondary teaching minor requires an overall GPA of 2.5. Specific Requirements: Minimum of 28 credit hours. Child and Family Studies courses required (13 credit hours): 140 (4), 150 (5), 340 (4). Child and Family Studies courses to elect from (15 credit hours): 245 (4), 364 (4), 440 (4), 450 (3), 465 (4), and one of the following may be included: 115 (3), 315 (3). Program: Child Development- Associate of Applied Science Degree General Education Requirements: (26 hours) A minimum of 93 hours are required to complete this degree. The required courses in the major field not to exceed 67 credit hours. Engl 101, 102, or Commun 102 or 307. At least 20 hours from the General Education courses listed in the catalog, including one course in each of the four areas, Humanities, Natural Science, Social Science and Personal Development. An overall GPA of 2.00 or C is required. Specific Requirements : A minimum of 39 credit hours Chfam courses required: 101 (3) or 310 (5), 150 (5), 255 (3), 256 (4), 340 (4), 360 (3), 362 (4), 364 (3), and 492 (1). Preschool Teaching Experience 9 credit hour options arranged in consultation with adviser: Chfam 371 (3) and 372 (6); or Chfam 368 (4) and 5 credit hours of off-campus practicum experience; or Practicum Experience both off and on campus (9). Courses to elect from with approval of adviser (28 credit hours). Seek additional depth in Child and Family Studies. Select courses from across campus to enhance teaching competency in the areas of: Art, Science, Literature, Music, Health and First Aid, Foods, etc. Advisers will suggest specific appropriate courses. |
