Description The Corrections and Law Enforcement Education program provides students with a liberal education, while offering students academic preparation through an expanded emphasis on criminal justice education. The program also offers a basis for graduate study and seeks to contribute significantly to the improvement of the quality of justice administration. Education Criminal justice agencies in the recent past have established advanced academic standards. Education is becoming a more meaningful factor in selection of law enforcement, corrections, and security personnel for initial employment, promotion and for administrative roles. Employment Outlook The demand for criminal justice personnel with academic qualifications in this relatively recent area of interest is increasing. National standards and goals have been formulated with defined minimum qualifications. Opportunities for employment within the criminal justice field are excellent. Related Careers Law Enforcement: local, county, state, and federal wildlife resources, corrections, security, criminalistics, highway safety, parks and recreation, forestry service, government (local, state, and federal). Program: Law Enforcement Major Bachelor Degree General Requirements: Specific course requirements of the college. Bachelor Degree General Education requirements. A minor is required except in the Criminalistics Emphasis. Majors must have a C or better in courses required for this major. Majors must have an overall G.P.A. of 2.00 or C. 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). Specific Requirements: Minimum of 45 credit hours must be in Law Enforcement with 18 hours in upper division work. Corrections and Law Enforcement Courses Required (37 minimum credit hours): SS101 (5), 133 (3), 134 (3), 135 (3), 139 (3), 486 (3), 498 (3), 499 (3). At least one course from: 235 (3), 236 (3), 312 (3), 410 (3). At least one course from: 239 (3), 309 (5), 406 (3), 470 (3). At least one course from: 211 (3), 212 (3), 213 (3), 304 |3). At least one course from: 411 (4), 412 (4), 413 (4). and 414 (4). Support courses required (16 minimum credit hours): Psych 345 (5); Soclgy 327 (3). At least one course from Polsci 370 (5), Mgmt 301 (4), Clee 302 (3). At least one course from Polsci 110 (5), 111 (4), 375 (4). Courses to elect from: Clee SS201, 281, 481, 292, 492, 415, 483 (1-5), Engl 310. These courses will count toward the 45 hour minimum required in Corrections and Law Enforcement. Criminalistics Emphasis Specific Requirements: Students can receive a double major in Law Enforcement and Chemistry (non-certification) by completing the Criminalistics Emphasis. Law Enforcement courses required: SS101 (5), 133 (3), 134 (3), 135 (3), 235 (3), 411 (4), 412 (4), 413 (4), 414 (3), 486 (3), 498 (3), 499 (3). Chemistry courses required: Chem 121 (5), 122 (5), 123 (5), 213 (5), 307 (5), 311 (4), 312 (4), 313 (4), 341 (4), 342 (4) 453 (3), 454 (5). Support courses required: Math 211 (5), 212 (5), 213 (5), 320 (5); Phsx 111 (4), 112 (4), 113 (4), 114 (1), 115 (1), 116 (1); Micro 205 (5), 325 (5); Zool 230 (5) or 330 (5). A minor is not required with a Criminalistics Emphasis. Program: Departmental Honors (Corrections and Law Enforcement) General Requirements: Enroll in the General Honors Program and complete 10 hours of General Honors courses. Maintain an overall GPA of 3.3. Fulfill the requirements for the departmental major. 177 Corrections & Law Enforcement Specific Requirements: In fulfilling the major, complete at least 15 hours on an Honors basis. In addition, complete 3 hours in Directed Readings 483, and 3 hours in Seminar 499. A student may take the following courses on an Honors basis: Clee 235, 236, 239, 302, 304, 313, 406, 408, and 410. (Corrections Honors: 233, and 339.). Permission from the Department Chairperson should be sought before registering in a course for Honors credit. A written agreement should be reached with the appropriate professor regarding the work expected for Honors credit. Program: Law Enforcement Minor General Requirements: A grade of C or better in courses required for this minor. Specific Requirements: Minimum of 26 hours of credit in Law Enforcement courses. Courses Required: SS101 (5), 133 (3), 134 (3), 135 (3), 139 (3). Courses to elect from: Nine (9) hours of upper division work selected from the following in consultation with an adviser: Clee 302 (3), 304 (3), 309 (5), 312 (3), 406 (3), 410 (3), 411 (4), 412 (4), 413 (4), 414 (4), 415 (5),470 (3), 483 (1-5), 486 (3), 498 (3), 499 (3). Program: Law Enforcement- Associate of Science Degree General Requirements: Specific course requirements of the college. The state requirements in American History, Government, and Economics does not need to be completed. General Education requirements. An overall GPA of 2.00 or C is required. Grade of C or better in courses required for an Associate Degree. 93 total hours are required. Specific Requirements: Minimum of 24 credit hours in Law Enforcement courses. Law Enforcement courses required: SS101 (5), 133 (3), 134 (3), (135) (3), and 139 (3). Seven (7) hours additional Law Enforcement courses. Program: Corrections Major Bachelor Degree General Requirements: Specific requirements of the college. Bachelor Degree General Education requirements. A minor is required. Corrections majors must have a C or better in courses required for this major. Corrections majors must have an overall GPA of 2.00 or C. 183 total hours are required for this degree.
