Show 180 History Program: History Minor and History Teaching Minor General Requirements: A grade of C or better in minor courses. Transferring students with History minors must take at least one approved History course at Weber State College. Specific Requirements: Minimum of 25 credit hours in History courses. Courses required: For History departmental minors (17 credit hours): Hist 101 (4), 102 (4), 103 (4); 170 (5) or 120 (5) or 121 (5). Asian Studies Minor The Department of History participates in the Asian Studies Minor Program. Students who wish to participate should indicate their desire to do so with the Asian Studies representative who will help him work out a proper combination of courses to fit their particular needs. Program: History Honors Major General Requirements: Enroll in General Honors Program and complete at least 10 hours of General Honors courses. Maintain an overall GPA of 3.3. Fulfill requirements for History departmental or teaching major. Specific Requirements: In fulfilling requirements for a History major, take at least twenty hours of History courses on an Honors basis. Take an additional 2 hours in a History Honors senior project course. A student may receive History Honors credit in any upper division History course including: Directed Readings, Hist 483 (for a maximum total of 5 hours). Permission from the department chairperson should be sought before registering in a course for Honors credit. A written agreement should be reached with the appropriate professor regarding the work expected for Honors credit. (See Composite and Interdepartmental Programs.) History Courses SS101. United States History (5) Colonial Foundations and subsequent history of the United State through the Civil War. (For History majors primarily.) SS121. United States History (5) Development of the United States from the Civil War to present. (For History majors primarily.) SS170. American Civilization (5) A consideration of the historical, political and economic growth of the United States from Colonial beginnings to the present. (Not to be taken by History majors.) 214. Introduction to Ethnic Studies (3) The course will sketch the historical background, literary achievements; current movements, and legislation; cultural traits, and cross-cultural attitudes, myths and stereotypes of the Black, Chicano and Native American people in the United States. 289. Cooperative Work Experience (1-9) Open to all sophomore and junior students in the History department. The course objective for each student will be developed between the student, the department, and a suitable employer providing the opportunity for an on-the-job experience. Evaluation of course participants will be shared between the employer, student, and the department. Grade and amount of credit will be determined by the department. 292. When the number is used it will be accompanied by a brief and specific descriptive title. The Methods and Research Tools of Historians (2) (Should be taken during Sophomore year). Engl 103 is a prerequisite. SS301. Twentieth Century World (5) World Civilization in the 20th century. SS305. Foundations of American Civilization (3) Colonial foundations to the American Revolution, with emphasis on the English influence. SS307. The Age of the American Revolution (3) Causes of the American Revolution; the military, diplomatic, and social aspects of the Revolution; the formation of the American Union under the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. SS309. The New Republic (3) The development of the United States from 1789 to 1824, including emphasis on the Federalist Era, Jeffersonian Democracy, the War of 1812 and the Era of Good Feelings. SS312. The Age of Jackson (3) The middle period of U.S. History, including the political aspects of Jacksonian 181 History Democracy, territorial expansion, sectionalism, social reform, and the slavery controversy. SS313. Slavery, the Civil War and Reconstruction (5) Slavery, the causes of the Civil War, political, economic, social and military aspects of that conflict: and reconstruction to 1877. SS315. The Emergence of Modern America (3) Economic, social, and political history of the United States. 1877-1920, emphasizing the forces that changed America from a rural society to an urban nation. SS319. Recent America (3) Recent economic, social, and political aspects of the United States from 1920 to the present. 326. Chicano History (3) Traces the development of the Mexican Americans from their Indian and Spanish heritage to the present with emphasis on their contibutions to American life. 342. History of Technology (3) The evolution of applied science and its impact upon society from earliest times to the present. 374. History of Africa (5) Africa from earliest times to the present. 375. Black History (3) The development of the African American in the history of the United States from African origins to the present with emphasis on Black contributions to American life. 415. Woman in American History (3) An outline and analysis of history as experienced by the American woman, to include a discussion of the major themes and movements relative to the development of womens rights in the United States from the colonial period to the present. 420. Constitutional History of the United States (5) Study of the Constitution, its interpretation and application. 422. United States at War in the 20th Century (3) A study of the involvement of the United States in the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, Korean War and the war in Vietnam. 423. Social and Cultural History of the United States (3) A study in the cultural development of the United States with a strong emphasis on the post 1890 period. 425. Diplomatic History of the United States (5) Diplomatic relations of the United States and the development and reflection of foreign policy. 426. History of the American Indian (3) Traces the history of the American Indian with a special emphasis on the political, cultural, and economic problems faced by native Americans. Particular attention is paid to their contribution to contemporary society. 427. Far Western History (3) Traces the settlement of the region from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Coast. Influence of the Spanish in the Southwest. 428. Utah History (3) Growth and development of the state of Utah in relation to her western environment. 429. History of the American Southwest (3) A history of the American Southwest from the age of Spanish exploration and occupation through the 19th century. SS430. History of the Middle Ages (300-1500) (5) Medieval civilization and institutions, including a study of the Renaissance. SS431. Europe from the Renaissance to the French Revolution (5) European survey from the Reformation through the Congress of Vienna. SS432. Nineteenth Century Europe (1815-1900) (5) Development of Europe from the Congress of Vienna to the period of the First World War. 433. Twentieth Century Europe (1900 to present) (5) A study of Europe from the First World War to the present. Emphasis on the new role of Europe. 440. Russian History (5) Tzarist and Soviet Russia. 442. History of Modern France (3) The history of modern France since 1789. Emphasizes the social, economic and political topics. 443. History of Germany (3) A consideration of the political, social, economic, and cultural developments of Germany from 1848 to the present. 444. History of Scandinavia (3) An economic, social, political, and cultural study of Scandinavia. 450. English History (to 1714) (3) Beginnings to the advent of the Hanoverians. 451. English History (since 1714) (3) Hanoverians to the present. 459. History of Spain and Portugal (3) A survey of political, economic, social, and cultural development of Spain and Portugal to the present. 460. Latin America Pre-Colombian Indian Period and Colonial Period (5) A survey of political, economic, social, and cultural development of Latin America from the earliest times to the independence movement. 461. Latin America, Modern Period (5) A survey of political, economic, social, and cultural developments of the Latin American republics to the present. 465. History of Mexico (3) A survey of the development of Mexico to the present. SS470. History of the Far East (5) Development of the Far East and its influence in the contemporary era. The nations of China, Japan, and Korea are studied primarily. 471. History of South East Asia (5) Development of South East Asia and its influence in the contemporary era. The nations of Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Burma, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines are studied. 472. History of South Asia (5) Development of South Asia from its beginnings to the present. The nations of India, Pakistan, Bangledesh, Ceylon, Afghanistan, Nepal, and Bhutan are studied. 473. History of the Middle East (5) The Middle East from early beginnings to the present, with emphasis upon the 19th and 20th centuries. 483. Directed Reading (1-2) (May be repeated for a total of 5 hours.) 489. Cooperative Work Experience (1-9) A continuation of History department 289 Cooperative Work Experience. Open to all junior and senior students. 492. May be repeated as long as the subject matter of workshop is not related. Permission of director required. 498. History Honors Senior Project (2) This course is designed for the History Honors student and will be taken in conjunction with History Seminar 499. It will give the Honors student opportunity to develop more depth and skills in History on an Honors level of performance. 499. Seminar (2) The study of bibliography and historiography with practical application in a carefully written seminar report. Limited to History majors. (Should be taken during senior year.) |
