Program: Automotive Service Technology Institutional Certificate Individualized programs may be designed by the student and the faculty adviser to meet the specific need of individual students. In each case the program must follow the guidelines for an Institutional Certificate and must have approval of the Department Chairperson. Brakes, Suspension and Steering (6) Operation, diagnosis and maintenance of brake, suspension and steering systems. Three one-hour lectures and three labs per week. 102A. Brakes (4) Principles, repair and adjustment of the brake system. Two one-hour lectures and two labs per week.(102A & 102B constitute 102) 102B. Suspension and Steering (4) Principles, repair and adjustment of the suspension and steering systems. Two one-hour lectures and two labs per week.(102A & 102B constitute 102). 112. Engines (8) Operational principles of basic engine systems and major overhaul of the complete automotive engine. Four one-hour lectures and four labs per week. 122. Drive Mechanisms (8) Theory, operation, diagnosis and maintenance of the clutch, standard transmission, automatic transmission, drive lines, differentials and front wheel drive units. Four one-hour lectures and four labs per week. 122A. Drive Mechanisms (4) Theory, operation, diagnosis, and maintenance of the clutch, standard transmission, drive lines, differentials and front wheel drive. Two one-hour lectures and two labs per week.(122A & 122B constitute 122). 122B. Automatic Transmission (4) Theory, operation, diagnosis and external maintenance of the automatice transmission. Two one-hour lectures and two labs per week. (122A & 122B constitute 122). 130. Basic Electricity and Electronics (2) Fundamentals, use of meters, wiring diagrams and theory of operation of seleted basic devices. One one-hour lecture and one lab per week. 140. Automotive Fundamentals (3) Operation, diagnosis and repair of selected automotive systems, as well as general auto shop orientation for beginners and non-automotive majors. 151. Automatic Transmission Overhaul (4) Operation, diagnosis, maintenance and overhaul of the automatic transmission. Two one-hour lectures and two labs per week. Prerequisite: Autosv 122 or 122B. 189. Cooperative Work Experience (1-9) Open to all first year students in Automotive Service. The course objectives for each student will be developed between the student, the department, and a suitable employer providing the opportunity for on-the-job experience. Evaluation of course participants will be shared between the employer, student, and the department. 202. Fuel and Emission Control Systems (8) Theory, operation, diagnosis and repair of fuel and emission control systems. Four one-hour lectures and four labs per week. 202A. Carburetion (4) Fuel System Components and carburetion theory, diagnosis and repair. Two one-hour lectures and four labs per week. 202B. Fuel and Emission Control Systems (4) Induction and exhaust systems, fuel injection, super and turbo charging, and emission control systems. Two one-hour lectures and two labs per week. (202A & 202B constitute 202). 212. Electrical Systems (8) Theory, operation, diagnosis and repair of batteries, starting, charging, ignition and electrical accessory systems. Five one-hour lectures and four labs per week. 212A. Electrical Systems (4) Basic theory of electricity, and operation, diagnosis and repair of batteries & starting systems. Two one-hour lectures and two labs per week. (212A & 212B constitute 212) 212B. Electrical Systems (4) Theory, operation, diagnosis and repair of charging, ignition and electrical accessory systems. Two one-hour lectures and two labs per week. Prerequisite: Autosv 212A. (212A & 212B constitute 212) 222. Diagnosis and Tune-Up (6) Diagnosis, adjustment, and repair of the systems which effect engine performance. Use of diagnostic equipment is emphasized. Three one-hour lectures and three labs per week. Recommended prerequisites: Autosv 112, 202, and 212. 230. Air Conditioning (2) Operation and servicing of automotive air conditioning system and components. One one-hour lecture and one lab per week. 240. Theory of Internal Combustion Engines (2) New developments, construction, operation, science and theory of gas, diesel, and airplane engines. For students with previous mechanical training. One one-hour lecture and one lab per week. 250. Small Internal Combustion Engines (3) Theory, construction, maintenance and reconditioning of small two and four-cycle internal combustion engines. Emphasis on motor cycle and high performance recreational vehicle engines. Two one-hour lectures and one lab per week. 286. Automotive Shop Practice (4) Provides an opportunity to practice skills needed by Automotive Service technicians derived from classroom and shop experience. Simulates line mechanic work. Instructor approval required. 289. Cooperative Work Experience (1-9) Open to second year Automotive Service students. A continuation of Automotive Service 189. 292. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-6) In order to provide flexibility and to meet many different needs, a number of specific offerings are possible using this catalog number. When the number is used it will be accompanied by a brief and specific descriptive title.
