Salt Lake Tribune Oct 11th 1957 12A By Associated Press HAVERHILL, MASS, Oct. 10— The mother of two young children lay critically ill in Hale Hospital Thursday night, adamant in her refusal to permit blood transfusions. Mrs. Gardner Denno, 43, a member of Jehovah's Witnesses, refuses to submit to the transfusions because of belief she should not receive the blood of another. "Now we are right back where we started," said her anguished husband after he and two clergymen had pleaded with her in vain. Mrs. Denno was adjudged mentally competent by Dr. Morris Yoshi of Andover. She had a bleeding bowel ulcer, Joining Denno is his bedside appeal were the Rev. Luther E. Tyson of Grace Methodist Church and Rabbi Abraham Jacobson of Temple Emanuel. Quoting the Bible, Rabbi Jacobson told Mrs. Denno she had wrofigly interpreted scripture which he said forbids mixing of animal and human blood except to save life. He further told her blood does not become unclean in transfusion. REMINDING the sick woman of her two children, Darlene, 3, and Nathan, 2, Rabbi Jacobson told her she should live, if possible. However, she has said that if she cannot be with her children in this world she will see them in the next.
