PRESIDENT McKAY BACK IN SADDLE FOR LONG RIDE July 8th ‘57 President David 0. McKay of the Latter-day Saints Church relived part of his younger life as a mounted courier Saturday by riding his horse over an l&k mile trip to LaPlate, a ghost town northeast of Huntsville. President McKay rode with 42 men of the Huntsville Jefferson Hunt Camp, Sons of Utah Pioneers. The white-haired president — aged 83 — covered the route astride his own horse and stopped many times along the trail to admire the scenery and the works of nature. The Mormon leader covered the same route many times during the summer of 1891 when he rode as a mounted carrier to the Sunup Mine at LaPlate. During its peak years the silver city had over 3,500 citizens. In normal years it was a town of over 600. Only three deteriorating buildings remain and all of the mine openings except the Red Jacket and Loretta have caved in.
