It was of interest to read in the Ogden Standard Examiner of October 28, 1938, the reasons why the students thought they should be given the bell. They reported that a stand would be built for the one-thousand pound relic, and that it would be placed in a hallowed spot on the campus, also that they would "gong" it when the college won an athletic victory. In pleading their case to the Commissioners they said, "We think it will get better care here, [Weber]. It will be cherished as one of our fondest traditions. The freshmen each year will be required to polish it and keep it polished. It will collect no cobwebs or rust. Up here it will live on and continue to make history. Students will stage rallies around it. . . . Heroes of the school will be honored by allowing them to take a whack at it." In this same City Commissioners' meeting, the decision as to where the bell should go was left up to Commissioner William J. Rackham. Immediately the students planned an extensive campaign by requesting that all students,civic clubs, the Chamber of Commerce, and the townspeople write letters to Commissioner Rackham urging that the bell be given to the college. The Commissioner advised that he would recommend that Weber College be given the relic.
