One of them I knew. They spent close to one hour poking fun at mefor washing walls and doing what they called “slave labor.” One boy made the comment that he would not leave home for seventy-five cents an hour. This was my hourly rate. After they had finished with me and walked away, I had doubts about my job. Each Monday morning the Upward Bound students line up and money. I was not taking home ten dollars a week after taxes, from - end of the summer I had earned $324.87 and my heckling friends had are my given ten dollars in cash for their weekly spending full-time job. MOTIV ATION If the boys who so delighted in laughing at me had spent the summer washing walls, cleaning sewers, laying cement and cleaning offices it would have been motivation to go to college. It was all the motivation I needed. I have no desire to spend the rest of my life doing that kind of word. QUIT MORALIZING The Upward Bound program: forbids the students to do any type of word at the time they are participating in the program. They are to be completely relieved of responsibility while the “motivation process” is taking place. This is strictly against all concepts upon which this great country of ours was founded. What is your freedom worth What are your God-given rights worth What would you exchange them for? What would you do to protect or insure the security of them? The obvious answer is that they are priceless, and one would put his life on the line in order to protect them. As free men, we are able to exercise and thereby strengthen these rights. Under any other type of rule they would be forced to lie dormant and die. So it is only obvious that our democracy, which insures freedom, liberty and equality for all men, should be of utmost importance to us all. However, to say this is easy. To prove it is another question. People are quick to talk but slow to act. This is a definite weakness—a weakness that could easily lead to a collapse of our gov-ernment. NOT AFRAID 1967 Q. What requirements must I meet to qualify for a II-S classification as an undergraduate college student? Uuward Bound is designed to motivate high school juniors and seniors to a college education. The thought behind the program is a good one. Students who have not had the benefits of home motivation probably need a little encouragement; but is this what they are getting? The Upward Bound program exposes students to college life. Hopefully, this will spur them on to further their academic reuqirements to participate in many social activities.
