Germans announce allied landings in channel islands of Guernsey and Jersey; say allied tanks land at Arromanches midway between Cherbourg and L.e Havre; allies incessantly employing assault boats off Oystreham. 610 a. m. Paris radio says battle in Normandy seems to be gaining depth. 634 a. m. Berlin reports fierce fighting going on everywhere with counter thrusts in progress. 710 a. m. Big channel guns on French coast fire on Dover. 715 a. m. 11,000 allied planes bomb and strafe miles of Normany coast. 720 a. m. Marshal Petain broadcasts to Frenchmen to avoid reprisals. 734 a. m. Germans report nazi counter attacks knock out 35 allied tanks in Seine bay area and making progress east of Cherbourg. 740 a. m. Supreme headquarters receives information beachheads established in Normandy with troops striking inland. 840 a. m. Unconfirmed report says Hitler en route to France. Germans identify four American and two British air-borne divisions operating in Normandy and Seine bay areas. 915 a. m. Allies reported several miles inland in Normandy. Germans report penetration between Caen and Isigny. |
