If one suggests a billion dollar loan for education it will be branded as wildcat finance. But when we are at war, and in fear of the enemy, we can raise seventeen billion dollars in one drive. He asserted the nation can go to the limit in providing for destruction, but is not willing to spend money plentifully for education of children, the most precious thing we have. Referring to the expenditure by Weber county citizens of 3,877,000 for beer, cigarets and hard liquor, Patriarch Smith said Some of this expenditure is coming from Mormon pockets. Latter day Saints are putting shackles on themselves. Patriarch Smith pointed to our boys who are fighting for freedom, but we at home refuse to fight for it here. We stand to lose this war just exactly like we lost the last one. We may completely banish the axis and lose the war because we can so shackle our freedom we shall not have won a thing. Blame For War It does no good to say we had the war forced upon us. We cant lay the blame on the axis, the church official said. We say we want peace. We dont want peace. We want an end of this conflict so we shall return to our former ease, sloth and irresponsibility. When we want peace badly enough, we will have it. This nation will not have peace until it returns to the gospel of Jesus Christ, Patriarch Smith said. Too much of our truth is embalmed and put away where it does not do much good. The job of a prophet is always tremendously difficult. It is not his business to tell, the people what they like, but it is his business to tell the people what the Lord wants them to do. So prophets have been unpopular and have been put to death.
