Quantitative language requirement (courses informal logic, economics, business, math, or computer science): Fifteen (15) hours will be selected from non-general education courses to be determined by the Department of English, in consultation with the student, to achieve the student's occupational goals. PROGRAM: ENGLISH TEACHING MAJOR BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE General Requirements: • Specific Requirements (see index). • Requirements for General Education (see index). Psych SS101 (5) in the Social Science area is recommended for English Teaching majors. • English Teaching majors must have a 2.0 or better in major courses. • English Teaching majors must achieve an overall minimum of 2.50 GPA. • 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). • Students obtaining an English Teaching major must satisfy the School of Education Certification Program (see Teacher Education Program). These courses must include the following: Educl95 (1), 300 (2), 301 (4), 303 (3), 305 (3), 462 (4), 463 (4), 495 (15), 499 (3). Specific Requirements: • A student may select either Option I or Option II to fulfill the English Teaching major. Option I requires an academic minor whereas Option II provides a concentration of English classes satisfying both the major and the minor in the English field. • Twenty-four hours of a foreign language are required for either option. Option I (Academic Minor required): Minimum of 48 credit hours in English courses, 30 of which must be upper division. The following English courses are required: • English 308 (3) • Writing. One of the following: Engl 321 (3), 325 (3), or 328 (3). • Grammar. Engl 323 (3). • Methods. Engl 340 (3) and 341 (3). • Language. PROGRAM: ENGLISH TEACHING MAJOR BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE- Program requirements are the same as for the English Teaching Major- Bachelor of Arts Degree as listed under Option I (Academic Minor required) and Option II (Academic Minor not required ). B.S. students should take 15 hours under Quantitative language requirements as listed under English major for B.S. degree instead of the 24 hours of foreign language requirements. PROGRAM: ENGLISH AND COMMUNICATION COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJOR - (See program requirements in the composite Teaching Majors section of the School of Education.) PROGRAM: ENGLISH DEPARTMENTAL HONORS General Requirements: • Enroll in General Honors and complete at least 15 hours of General Honors courses (see the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog). • Maintain an overall GPA of 3.3. • Fulfill requirements for English departmental or teaching major. Specific Requirements: • In fulfilling the requirements for English Departmental Honors the English major must take at least 15 credit hours on an Honors basis. This must include the senior seminar Engl 499. • The department strongly recommends the following be considered by the Honors candidate: Chaucer, Milton and/or Shakespeare. • A student may receive English Honors credit for any upper division English course including Directed Readings, Engl 483, for a maximum of 5 hours. Permission from the department chair should be sought before registering in a course for Honors credit. A written agreement should be reached with the appropriate professor regarding the work expected for Honors credit. (See the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog.) ASIAN STUDIES MINOR The Department of English participates in the Asian Studies Minor Program. Students who wish to participate should indicate their desire to do so with the departmental Asian Studies representative who will help the students work out a proper combination of courses to fit their particular needs. (See the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog.)
