Show Composite Programs Education Courses • Information PROGRAM: PHYSICAL SCIENCE/ MATHEMATICS/COMPUTER SCIENCE COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJOR BACHELOR DEGREE General Requirements: • Specific Requirements (see index). • Requirements for General Education (see index). • Psych SS101 (5) in the Social Science area is recommended for Physical Science/Mathematics/Computer Science Composite Teaching majors. • A minor is not required. • Physical Science/Mathematics/Computer Science Composite Teaching majors must have a C- or better in major courses. • An overall GPA of 2.75. • 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). • Students obtaining one of the Physical Science/Mathematics/ Computer Science Composite Teaching majors must satisfy the School of Education Certification Program (see Secondary Education Program). These courses must include the following: Educl95 (1), 300 (2), 301 (4), 303 (3), 305 (3), 462 (4), 463 (4), 495 (15), 499 (3). Specific Requirements: Students must choose either Option I or Option II. Option I - Physical Science and Mathematics: • Courses required in three of the four areas: Chemistry, Geology and Geography, Mathematics, and Physics. At least 27 hours of specific courses must be taken in one area and at least 20 hours in each of the other two areas selected. Option II - Mathematics and Computer Science: • Courses are required in three areas. Both Mathematics and Computer Science must be included; and one of the areas of Chemistry, Geology and Geography, or Physics may be selected by the student. At least 27 hours of specific courses must be taken in either Mathematics or Computer Science and at least 20 hours in each of the other two areas. • Chemistry courses required: Twenty seven hour list: Chem NS121 (5), NS122 (5), 123 (5); at least twelve hours from Chem 213 (5), 311 (4), 312 (4), 341 (4). Twenty hour list: Chem NS121 (5), NS122 (5), 123 (5); five hours from Chem 213 (5), 311 (4), 312 (4). • Geology and Geography courses required: Twenty-seven hour list: Geol NS101 (5) or NS111 (5) or 420 (5); 112 (1), NS121 (4), 122 (5), 295 (1-8) and/or 495 (1-8); two of Geol 306 (4), 315 (4), or 318 (4); Geogr NS101 (5). Twenty hours list: Geology NS101 (5) or NS111 (5) or 420(5); 112(1),NS121 (4), 122 (5), 295 (1-8) and/or 495 (1-8); one of Geol 306 (4), 318 (4), or 315 (4); Geogr NS101 (5) recommended. Mathematics courses required: Twenty-seven hour list: Math 107 (5), 211 (5), 212 (5), 213 (4); 310 (3) or 312 (3) or 331 (3); one additional course selected from: Math 310 (3), 331 (3), 335 (3), 341(4). Computer Science courses required: Twenty-seven hour list: Comsci PD101 (4) or CIS PD170 4); Educ 320 (3); two language courses selected from Comsci 130 (4), 140 (4), 225 (4), 160 (4), 220 (4), or CIS 220 (4); Comsci 265 (4); select one course from Comsci 275 (4) or 266 (4) or 302 (4) or 310 (4); select two additional, approved, upper division courses in Comsci (may include CIS 365). Specific Requirements: • The Social Science Composite Teaching major consists of an academic major in one of the following three areas: Geography, History, Political Science (see index for program). • As well as the above major, a total of 45 credit hours in three of the academic disciplines listed in areas 1 and 2 below. At least one of the three concentrations must be from those listed in area 1 and different from the area chosen as a major. A minimum of fourteen credit hours approved by the Social Science Composite Teaching major adviser must be completed in each of the three areas of concentration. Courses taken to meet this requirement may also be used to satisfy General Education area requirements if appropriate. Area 1 - Geography, History, Political Science. Area 2 - Anthropology, Sociology, Economics, Psychology. • Support courses required: Commun HU102 (3) or an approved equivalent and Educ 450 (3). Social Studies Concepts for Elementary Teachers (4) Su, A, W, S Fundamental concepts from the social sciences commonly found in elementary social studies curriculum. 280. The Problem Solving Process and Structure of Media Centers (3) Minor is not currently being offered. 292. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-6) In order to provide flexibility and to meet many different needs, a number of specific offerings are possible using this catalog number. When the number is used it will be accompanied by a brief and specific descriptive title. The specific title with the credit authorized for the particular offering will appear on the student transcript. May be taken on a Credit/No Credit basis. *300. Interpersonal Skills for Teachers (2) Su, A, W, S Experiences intended to develop basic skills in personal interaction and adaptation to teaching. *301. Teaching and Learning Processes (4) Su, A, W, S Modules on fundamental concepts and processes related to human behavior and learning as they apply to instructional planning and student motivation. Field experience required. Prerequisite: Educ 300 and admission to Teacher Education. *302. Instructional Planning (1) Su, A, W, S For Early Childhood majors. Module on lesson planning. Prerequisite: admission to Teacher Education. *303. Instructional Technology (3) Su,A,W,S Modules on the basic concepts, techniques, and applications of media materials and computers in the classroom. Prerequisite: Educ 300 and admission to Teacher Education. *305. Current School Topics (3) Su, A, W, S Modules on school health, cultural pluralism, evaluation and current reform practices. Prerequisite: Educ 301 and admission to Teacher Education. *306. Reading Methods (6) A, W, S Modules on the nature of reading, approaches to teaching reading, reading readiness, word recognition, comprehension, and assessment. Field experience required. Prerequisite: Educ 301. *308. Language Arts Methods (3) A, W, S Modules on teaching handwriting, spelling, listening, oral communication, and written communication. Field experience required. Prerequisite: Educ 301. *310. Mathematics Methods (3) A, W, S Modules on trends, methods, and materials appropriate for teaching mathematics in elementary schools. Field experience required. Prerequisite: Educ 301. *312. Science and Social Studies (4) A, W, S Modules emphasizing the methods of teaching in science, and social studies in the elementary school. Field experience required. Prerequisite: Educ 301. *314. Arts Methods and Gifted Education (3) A, W, S Modules on art-music methods and introductory exposure to gifted/talented instructional activities. Field Experience required. Prerequisite: Educ 301. 316. Management and Discipline Methods (2) A, W, S Modules on classroom management and discipline in the elementary school. Applications of Microcomputers in Education (3) Su, A, W, S Methods of incorporating microcomputers into the field of education. *321. Teaching Reading (3) An overview of the developmental reading program as it relates to secondary school with consideration given to the reading process, methods, and materials for instruction. *322. Science in the Elementary School (3) Su,W An indepth emphasis on methods of teaching science. 323.
