Show Chemistry Chemistry PROGRAM: CHEMISTRY MAJOR AND CHEMISTRY TEACHING MAJOR BACHELOR DEGREE General Requirements: • Specific Requirements (see index). • Requirements for General Education (see index). • A minor is required. • Chemistry majors must have an average GPA of 2.00 or better in major courses, and an overall GPA of 2.00 or better. • Chemistry teaching majors must have a C or better in major courses, and an overall GPA of 2.50 or better. • 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above.) Specific Requirements: Chemistry Major: Option 1 (ACS certified): • Minimum of 62 credit hours in Chemistry courses. • Chemistry courses required: Chem NS121 (5), NS122 (5), 123 (5), 213 (5), 311 (4), 312 (4), 313 (4), 341 (4), 342 (4), 343 (4), 453 (3), 454 (5), 460 (5), 470 (3), 480 (2). • Support courses required: Math 211 (5), 212 (5), 213 (4), 321 (3), 325 (3); Phsx NS261 (4), NS262 (4), NS263 (4), 264 (1), 265(1), 266(1). • Fifteen hours of German or 9-15 hours of computer language, or their equivalent, are recommended, but not required. PROGRAM: PHYSICAL SCIENCE/ MATHEMATICS/COMPUTER SCIENCE COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJOR BACHELOR DEGREE - (See program requirements in the Composite Teaching Majors section of the School of Education.) PROGRAM: CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENTAL HONORS General Requirements: • Enroll in the General Honors Program and complete 10 hours of General Honors courses (see the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog). • Maintain an overall GPA of 3.3. • Fulfill requirements for either Option 1 or Option 2 departmental major. Specific Requirements: • In fulfilling requirements for a Chemistry major take at least 18 hours of Chemistry Honors credit. • Complete a Chemistry Honors Senior Project in Chem 480 for a minimum of 2 hours; credit received in 480 may count as part of the required 18 hours. • A student may receive Chemistry Honors credit in the following courses: Chem NS121, NS122, 123, 213, 307, 311, 312, 313, 341, 342, 343, 453, 454, 460,470, 471,480, 499. Permission from the department chair should be sought before registering in a course for Honors credit. A written agreement should be reached with the appropriate professor regarding the work expected for Honors credit. (See the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog.) CHEMISTRY COURSES - CHEM m 100. Preparation for College Chemistry (3) A, W, S A course designed to provide the minimal prerequisite skills needed for entry into Chem NS121. Three lectures per week. NS101. Introduction to Chemistry (5) A, W, S A lecture-demonstration course for students with no previous chemistry background who are not majoring in areas requiring further chemistry. Five lecture-demonstrations a week. NS111. General Chemistry (5) Su, A Fundamentals of inorganic chemistry. Designed primarily for students of agriculture, forestry, family life and some other fields of life science. Three lectures, one recitation and one 3-hour lab a week. NS112. Elementary Organic Chemistry (5) Su, W, Elementary study of the compounds of carbon. Prerequisite: Chem NS111 or equivalent. Three lectures, one recitation and one 3-hour lab a week. NS113. Elementary Biochemistry (5) Su,S An elementary study of the chemical compounds and reactions of biological systems. Prerequisite: Chem NS 111, 112 or equivalent. Four lectures and one 3-hour lab a week. NS121,122,123. Principles of Chemistry (5-5-5) A series designed for all students who will take more than one year of chemistry. The fundamental principles of chemistry with laboratory emphasis upon qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis. Prerequisite: Math 105 and a chemistry course equivalent to high school chemistry or Chem 100. Three lectures, one recitation and one 3-hour lab a week. 131,132,133. Chemistry Laboratory for AP Students (1,1,1) Laboratory program for advanced placement students. Open only to high school students. 213. Quantitative Analysis (5) Su, W Theory and methods of gravimetric and volumetric analysis. Prerequisite: Chem 123. Three lecture-recitations and two 3-hour labs a week. 289. Cooperative Work Experience (1-9) Open to all students in the Chemistry Department who meet the minimum Cooperative Work Experience requirements of the department. The course objective for each student will be developed between the student, the department, and a suitable employer providing the opportunity for an on-the-job experience. Evaluation of course participants will be shared between the employer, student, and the department. Grade and amount of credit will be determined by the department. 292. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-6) In order to provide flexibility and to meet many different needs, a number of specific offerings are possible using this catalog number. When the number is used it will be accompanied by a brief and specific descriptive title. The specific title with the credit authorized for the particular offering will appear on the student transcript. 297. Chem Tech Seminar (1) A course designed to provide the skills in notebook organization, simple report writing, lab safety, instrument upkeep, minor instrumental trouble-shooting and industrial units of measurement that are needed to enter the job market as a chem tech.
