Show The close of a wonderful year but a sad one for Europe. Our heart goesout to those who are fighting for Democracy. December 31 Tuesday. Beautiful morning. Wrote to Lucile Hancock my sister and Oertel & Oscar, Mary, Avon Mrs Petty & Thair charles Rich Humphryes a nephew of Drs died from accident in auto on Dec 25. Died Dec 29 at Dee Hospital buried at Logan Dec 31. Owing to bad roads we did not go to services. Have most of my thank you letters written. The past year has been a very happy and blessed one for our family. Two grandchildren born no serious sickness and all have been well provided for. Thair and family came back from Panama & are now stationed in San Francisco, for which we are thankful. We have thirteen grandsons and thirteen granddaughters all bright & in good health. We (Dr & I) have enjoyed good health had a nice airplane trip to Ariz & Calif and have been blessed and happy. Almira C. Rich Summary of Days Events In European Conflict. Dec 31 40 LONDOND British shout for reprisals against Germany after waves of nazi bombers rain destruction on ancient center of London; prepare for strong defense agaisnt return of German fliers but night wears on without alarm; crowds cheer prime minister, inspecting damage; Britishers pleased with President Roosevelts speech. BERLIN Official quarters silent on Sunday night speech by President Roosevelt. BUDAPEST Hungary calls up thousands of troops complete mobilation expected by January 15; move interpreted as step in Germanys preparations for war in Balkans. ATHENS Strong Italian counterattack reported repulsed; Greeks drive toward key fascist base at Valona, capture more Italians; mountain batteries shell Italian last stand defense lines in Tepeleni Klisura sector. \ |
