Show Ogdenites Take In Sights Of Arizona, Coast By AirDr. and Mrs. Edward I. Rich and Pilot Kermit McKay and wife, returned Sunday afternoon from a four days' trip to Arizona and California. The trip was made in Dr. Junior E. Rich's private plane. They left Ogden at six a. m. and flew down over Bryce, Cedar Breaks and Zions parks, then on south to Grand Canyon and down Grand Canyon and over lake Mead and Boulder dam; landed at Boulder and ate lunch, then flew down the Colorado over Needles and Parker dam irrigation project and then on to Phoenix where they arrived at four p. m. The air was cool at eight thousand feet but on coming down found it to be very hot at Phoenix. They visited friends and relatives in Phoenix, and later Dr. Alonzo Browning drove them out to Mesa, where they spent the night with relatives. Among the relatives visited were an aunt and uncle of Mrs. Rich, who went to Arizona in 1887, and who were six weeks on the road from St. George to Phoenix; they both are now past 80 years, but active and well.At seven next morning they left Phoenix and flew over to Palm Springs where it was plenty hot. Then on to San Bernardino, where Dr. Rich's father laid out the city in 1851. Then on to Los Angeles and Ventura. At Ventura they visited with Dr. Rich's niece and her son, Dr. Royal Hendricks; then on over to Modesto where they were met by their daughter, Avon and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Junius H. Smart and family. They were all waiting to see them come out of the air. After taking them for a ride over their ranch they spent the afternoon and night with them.Next morning they went on to Palo Alto and spent the day withtheir daughter, Mary and husband, Mr. and Mrs. H. Taylor Peery and family.Sunday morning they left California and in four hours and fifteen minutes non-stop they were home. A wonderful trip, no one sick. They flew at an elevation of eleven thousand feet crossing the Sierra Nevadas. Arizona is dry and water is scarce. California is green, Nevada seems barren. Flying down the Colorado was wonderful, but hazardous, in case of motor difficulties.Dr. Rich's father made his first trip to California in 1849 and was gone one year and brought back 15, 000 in gold for his church on a pack mule. |
