Show Fliers Sink Nine Ships Berlin AnnouncesBERLIN, Jan. 29 UP The German air force Monday destroyed seven armed merchant ships and two patrol boats in North sea attacks, it was announced officially Tonday night.A British pursuit plane was shot down near Hartlepool in Durham near the Tyneside, the announcement said.The British said the only British air force casualty was a British plane pierced by a single machine gun bullet.The German air raiders suffered no losses, it was said.Monday night's announcement said: In line with air force reconnaissance flights over the North sea, an enemy convoy of armed merchantmen and patrol boats was attacked on January 29.Despite the heaviest enemy antiaircraft fire and despitethe arrival of enemy pursuit formations the following were destroyed: Seven armed merchant ships, two patrol boats.One enemy pursuit plane was shot down near Hartlepool. All our own planes returned safe and sound. |
