Show OGDEN CITY SHOWING a population of Thirty-six Thousand, Three Hundred and Forty Eight (36,348)—a comfortable and progressive in¬crease of 1213 over the compilation of 1917, the information in this, the 1918 issue of the Ogden City Directory, indicates the continued development of Ogden and suburbs at a rapid and substantial pace. Never in any twelve months of its history has the general busi¬ness, commercial development and increase in capacity of factories been so great. Ogden has gradually developed into the chief food manufacturing center between the Missouri River and the coast. Ogden receives the products of the farm, orchard and range from the hands of the producer; however, only a small per cent is passed on in the raw or unfinished condition; for example, Ogden buys grain; but it sells cereal foods, macaroni and malt. The quality of Ogden's manufactured products continues to be the highest. An additional unit in the meat packing industry was added during the past year when the Union Stock Yards of Ogden were completed and opened, adjoining the Ogden Packing & Provision Company plant. The latter company made further expansions while work was started during the year on a new live stock feed mill and feeding station with capacity of 10,000 cattle and 25,000 sheep. Additional meat packing branch plants were opened during the year in two Pacific coast cities and two eastern cities, while export shipments were started to Canada, England and France. Every other line of Ogden Manufacture shows similar increased capacity: Canneries, Cereal Food Plant, Evaporating and Pickle plants have been increased from 25% to 100% in capacity. The sugar industry has more than doubled: Besides great increase in the capa¬city of each plant, new factories have been built until Ogden capital now operates twelve sugar factories. Tin can factory, candy factories, bottling works, honey, salt, garment and knitting factories have all exceeded the output of any former year. The Ogden Iron Works, with increased capacity, now manufactures sugar machinery for the many factories building in the Intermountain region. Ogden's great wholesale houses have not only kept the pace, but have continually spurred factory, furnace and farm to greater industrial activity. Civic development has perhaps led in the march in improvements. New public institutions, schools and churches have been built, and existing structures improved. City water, sewer and sidewalk systems have been greatly extended, and, as a climax, several miles of asphaltum pavement have been completed. The number of names shown in this directory is 17,105 which, multiplied by 2YS as the average family attached to each name, in¬dicates the total population of 36,348. Respectfully submitted, R. L.
