Show Region Track Meet Friday Records Expected to Tumble In Prep Track Duel at WwsC _ Several records are expected to tumble Friday, when topflight prep track performers take to the Weber State College oval for the annual Region One track and field finals. 2 Trials will commence at 10 a.m., with the finals set for a 2:30 p.m. start. Top teams from Ogden, Ben Lomond, Bonneville, Weber, Roy, Bear River, Sky View and Logan will fight it out for Re- gion honors and also individual berths in the Class A State Championship Meet in Salt Lake on May 21. Several top stars will be fea- tured in Friday’s meet, among them, Roy’s Jim Maw, winner of the BYU Invitational Round title last week. All- ROYAL ACE Maw, a raw-boned 150-pounder is expected to again sweep both hurdle events and the broad jump. He will again meet stiff competition from Ben Lomond track whiz Bob Gillespie. Maw tape nipped Gillespie at the in both hurdle events the recent City Meet, in and set records in each. He ran_the high hurdles in 14.2 and the lows in .19 flat—both new city records. Maw also set a new standard in the broad jump with a leap of 22 feet, 994 inches. _ Another top dual is expected in the high jump between Ogden’s Brent Stringham and Bon- neville’s Clyde Baker. Stringham took Baker in the City Meet, setting a new record of 6 feet, 334 inches, but Baker came back in the BYU tional to even the Invita- score, and take the event with a jump of 6 feet, 3 inches. Another record-shattering performance is expected from Ben Lomond discus ace Scott Maw. ‘Maw tossed the platter 173 feet, 2% inches to crack all records in the BYU Invitational. Scott has been consistantly throwing over 170 feet this season and he. should be a sure-fire record buster Friday. TOP RACE - The mile event should be one of the top races of the after‘noon. Defending state champ, ‘Ron Zefferer of Ben Lomond is ‘the favorite, but slow recovery from a recent knee operation seems to have slowed Ron somewhat, and it could well be a three-way dual between Zefferer, Mark Bingham of Box Elder, and Roy’s Jeff Stonebraker. | As far as team standings go, Ben Lomond, the defending champion, and Ogden are again rated as the two top clubs, with Roy rated as an outside choice. Ogden is expected to be stronger for the Region Meet because of the apparent recovery from injuries of its sprinting ace Howard Noel. He now seems to have returned to form and he and Jay Uchida are definite threats to make it a sweep in the sprints. one-two |
