Admission Requirements Dedare your program of study (see page 17). There are no spedal admission or application requirements for the psychology major. Teaching majors must meet the Teacher Education admission and licensure requirements (see Teacher Education Department). General Education Refer to pages 37-43 for either Bachdor of Science or Bachelor of Arts requirements. A number of courses in the major fulfill general education requirements (SSI 010, SS2000) or graduation requirements (DV2370, DV3100, S3100, SI3600, and SI3610). Course Requirements for BS or BA Summary of Psychology Courses Required (36 credit hours) Refer to the Psychology Courses Table on the previous page. • Core General Courses: 10 hours • Core Content Courses: 15 hours • Additional Courses: 11 hours Additional Course requirements may be fulfilled by taking further Core Courses, Eledives Group A (Area Specialization) Courses, or Electives Group B (Individualized Instruction and Experiential) Courses. Psychology Teaching majors are also required to take HIST 4500, Teaching Social Studies in Grades 5-12, in addition to the courses required by the Teacher Education program, and also PSY 4000 or PSY 4090. PSY 4000 is recommended as the choice unless a case can be made for PSY 4090. PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENTAL HONORS » Program Prerequisite: Enroll in the General Honors Program and complete 6 hours of General Honors courses (see the Honors Program on page 45). » Grade Requirements: Maintain an overall GPA of 3.3. » Credit Hour Requirements: Meet the requirements below: In fulfilling a Psychology major, complete at least 6 hours of courses on an Honors basis. In addition, complete at least 6 hours in PSY 4910 taken as Psychology Honors senior project. Typically students will outline the Honors projed by the 2nd semester of thdr junior year. The purpose of this project is to do research of quality worthy of presentation to a professional meeting of psychologists such as UPA and RMPA. If the student is not able to present the research to one of these groups, they will present it to the faculty of the Department of Psychology and one outside member. Options may be changed with the consent of the faculty advisor. Any course selected for Honors credit may be changed to a non-honors status within the first 6 weeks of the semester. (See the Honors on page 45.) PSYCHOLOGY MINOR /TEACHING MINOR/BIS EMPHASIS Grade Requirements: A grade of "C" or better in courses used toward the Minor or BIS emphasis (a grade of "C-" is not acceptable). Credit Hour Requirements: Minimum of 18 credit hours (includes PSY SS1010). A minimum of 6 credit hours must come from the Core Courses and a maximum of 3 credit hours may be taken from Group B Elective Courses. Students who select the Psychology Teaching Minor must satisfy the Teacher Education admission and licensure requirements (see Teacher Education Department). Latin American Studies minor The Department of Psychology participates in the Latin American Studies Program. A student who wishes to enroll should meet with the Latin American Studies Coordinator who will help the student work out a proper combination of courses to fit her/his particular needs. Careers in Psychology (1) Presents inf ormation and the critical thuiking/decision making methods and adivities necessary for the exploration of careers in Psychology. Students leam life planning, career planning, and educational planning methods. The course requires students to develop their own plans and design an educational program.
