Show Continuing Education OFF CAMPUS PROGRAM The Off Campus instructional program is designed to provide credit and non-credit educational opportunities to groups off the campus who wish to pursue a degree program or to improve their vocational and personal competency. Classes are held Monday through Saturday at times consistent with requirements of the requesting group. Terry Paskins is coordinator. The College cooperates with the various governmental installations, businesses, and civic groups in planning and presenting specific courses to meet the needs of employees. Travel Study—Travel Study Tours may be arranged for groups who wish to relate themselves and their studies to the United States and to other lands. All persons attending must be regularly enrolled in a class or classes consistent with the objectives of the tour. Home Study—The Division of Continuing Education will make available courses by home study which are designed and developed by the various departments of the College through various media when sufficient demand is evident. CONFERENCE — INSTITUTE PROGRAM The Conference and Institute Program is designed to assist the various schools of the College in serving the educational conference needs of groups from all segments of society who desire information and instruction in specific fields. Services provided by the Division of Continuing Education consist of program planning, budget development and arrangements for physical facilities. This program is coordinated by Charles B. Swenson. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT The Division of Continuing Education provides an arm of the College which keeps direct communication with community needs both within the immediate region and on a State level. The primary purpose of this subdivision is to promote greater utilization of the resources of higher education for development of the total community. Business, industry, government agencies, civic groups and other groups are made aware of the services available through higher education. Herschel G. Hester III coordinates this program. Coordinating with the School of the College the following kinds of services are provided to aid and enhance community development: 1. research services, 2. consultant services, 3. educational classes and programs, 4. conferences, institutes and workshops. 348 Continuing Education PROGRAMS OF STUDY Many of the courses listed in the day section of the catalog will be taught in the Evening and Off Campus Programs in addition to those listed in the Continuing Education Section. The Division of Continuing Education provides the following programs of study: 1. Regular College courses in all departments of the college in which a student may accumulate credit toward an academic degree; however, not all schools of the college have an evening offering sufficient to meet graduation requirements by attending evening classes only. 2. General education courses to enable adults to become better informed; 3. Discussion programs to produce a better informed citizenry; 4. Technician and trade preparatory courses leading directly to employment in some of the occupational areas included in the day programs; 5. Courses designed to upgrade employer or employee competency; 6. Trade extension programs for: (1) Journeymen, to provide refresher courses in their chosen occupations, and (2) apprentices, to provide technical information related to their on-the-job experiences; 7. Hobby and recreational programs to aid adults to obtain leisure time activities and to plan for retirement years. An effort is made to present any course for which there are both a sufficient demand and available facilities. In most cases, a minimum of 10 requests from individuals or a minimum guarantee by an organization for a specific course is considered sufficient for exploratory action on the part of the college. FACULTY All members on the instructional staff are selected for their outstanding recent experience in education, business, and industry. Most of them are employed during the day in responsible positions in their fields of specialization, and bring to their classes the benefit of current knowledge and practical experience. 349 |
