Salt Lake City, Utah, Saturday Morning, July 27, 1935, Drifting Into Barbarism THE antireligious department of the German government, while not designated as a portfolio, is nevertheless one of the most active divisions of nazi administration. It seems to function under three heads anti Jewish, anti Catholic and anti Protestant. Minister Paul Joseph Goebbels has routed the Jews from office, from the beaches, from their homes and stores, from civil, military and religious activities. He calls his campaign cleansing the Jewish quarters and condones all brutality by which soldiers inflict upon Jewish men and women indignities, losses and injuries. Another wing of the black buzzard of intolerance is operated by the head of the secret police of the nation, General Hermann Goering, who declared in a recent official announcement that the safety of the Hitler administration renders it necessary to proceed with all energy against the political influence of Catholicism. Spies constantly dog the steps of Catholic priests and malicious informers attend every meeting of Catholics to report any expression capable of being tortured into an excuse for imprisonment or banishment. According to uncensored dispatches smuggled out of Berlin, nazi publications and official spokesmen are lumping Hebrews, Catholics and Protestant men of the cloth, and members of the steel helmet veterans organization together with hated communists and other reactionary or subversive elements, in the determined fight to make national socialism the faith and the religion of unified Germany. University of Michigan The Medical School (1850) offered one of the first medical school laboratory courses in physiology in the United States. In 1884 85 the schools listed equipment in the physiological laboratory exceeded that of any in the country except Harvard Medical School and the biological department of Johns Hopkins. Spies and thugs are carrying on a campaign of terror similar to that waged by Danton and Robespierre with their dangerous committee of public safety during the French revolution. In fact, the ignorant, resentful mob of oppressed peasantry in France had some excuse for its ferocity. Its vengeance was visited on wreckers of the country and tyrants who let children of the masses starve or die from abuse and neglect. In Germany there is no such excuse. The fanatical followers of the dictator are persecuting people who helped build Germany, helped finance it, helped defend it, helped make it powerful. In its armies there have been men of all religious denominations. In the darkest days of Napoleonic oppression well known Jews went to its rescue and financial rehabilitation. In the development of its industries millions of Catholics have done their part. In the establishment of Germanys prestige in scientific and educational circles, Jews, Catholics and Protestants have always been conspicuous and efficient. Governments may grow careless of the welfare of the people who support them. Rulers may become indifferent to the rights of subjects. Republics may sometimes merit the reproach of ingratitude. But Germany is punishing its taxpayers, its defenders, its benefactors and its thinkers, and discrediting its own claims to culture and civilization. This is not like the German people. It is not a fair representation of German character. They are naturally a home loving, studious, sentimental race. Those who have become Americans are highly regarded as fair minded, public spirited, tolerant citizens who could not be induced to injure a neighbor on account of religious or political differences. News from Berlin makes it very hard to understand the evil influence of Hitler and his doctrines. Still the record is growing. First the political dissenters were suppressed, next the Jews, then the Catholics, now all religious denominations and doubtless all minorities which cannot be absorbed by nazis in their rapacity for power.
