Show ISSUED EVERY MORNING BY THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE PUBLISHING CO. Salt Lake City, Utah, Sunday Morning, December 22, 1935, Peace on Earth, Good Will to Men NOW when Jesus was born in Bethlehem, of Judea, in the days of Herod, the king, behold there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying: Where is he that is born king of the Jews, for we have seen his star in the east and are come to worship him. St. Matthew. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night, and the glory of God shone about them, and they were sore afraid; and the angel said: Fear not, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people; for unto you is born this day, in the city of David, a Saviour; ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger; and suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, saying: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will to men. St. Luke. Nineteen centuries have passed. Christ is not forgotten. His name is still spoken with reverence and His words are often quoted in religious gatherings. Out of two billions of people in the world, 683,000,000 are classified as Christians, half of whom are Roman Catholics. There are 15,000,000 Jews, but dreams of the wise men of the east were misinterpreted, for Jesus Christ never became a king of the Jewish people nor a leader of their religious organization. Jean Cruveilhier (1791 to 1873) filled the chair of pathological anatomy in Paris endowed by a legacy of Dupuytren Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, Scotland Developed from a dispensary established by the College of Physicians in 1682 to serve the poor. A temporary building was opened in 1728 and patients were admitted to the Infirmary in 1741. Famous men connected with the Infirmary were Syme, Simpson, Spence and Lister. Joseph and Mary lived in Nazareth, whence they journeyed to Bethlehem to pay their taxes under a decree from Caesar Augustus, whose dominion extended over Palestine. There being no room for them at the inn, they lodged in a barn, where the Infant was born. His first bed was a manger, the humble beginning of a humble life devoted to humble people, as well as to those whom He later reproved and instructed in the temples and synagogues of His native land. While the teachings of Christ are not forgotten, they are not always observed in the acts and attitude of those who profess to be His followers. His example of humility, tolerance, compassion and self-denial seldom serves as a model, either in churches or for churchmen. How many pious women of this age of enlightenment would say to an erring sister: Neither do I condemn thee; go thy way and sin no more? How many men of righteous reputations follow the counsel in Christs great sermon wherein He blessed the poor, the meek, the charitable, the merciful and the peace makers? He said: Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you. How many of us heed these admonitions of the Master? Judge not, that ye be not judged, he said. Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye and then thou shalt see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brothers eye. A lesson in consistency which is well remembered but rarely observed. As we approach another Christmas, celebrated in all parts of the world where Christianity has taken root, the spirit which lies dormant in many hearts the rest of the year asserts its power over that selfishness and ruthlessness which are dominating characteristics of our civilization, as manifested in ordinary relations between neighbors or rivals in business and between nations that seek advantages over each other. Every page in the history of mankind contains such admissions written with pens of gold dipped in red ink from the hearts of persecuted peoples. Peace on earth, good will to men is a policy for all creeds parties, nations and groups of governments to adopt and enforce. It embraces the essentials of ideal religion and of good government. With that proclamation the birth of Christ was announced by the heavenly hosts and with those words the Christian era was inaugurated. Blessed are the peacemakers, said Jesus in His Sermon on the mount. The prayer He uttered at that time is a model of simplicity and sincerity; its plea reverberates in the hearts of all true men whether they profess a Christian belief or not. And the Golden Rule of treating others as one would wish to be treated forms the basis of decency, refinement, polite behavior and business integrity. |
