Freshmen List Differences in School, College Six Hundred at Ohio State Answer Questions for Educators COLUMBUS, Ohio What are the differences between high school and college? Why do so many students, successful in high school, have difficulty in adjusting themselves to college? Six hundred Ohio State university freshmen have answered these and similar questions of interest to educators endeavoring to make the jump from high school to college less abrupt. Themes Written Members of the freshmen English classes were asked to write themes telling how they found college to differ from high school. Differences that relate to study problems were found to be: 1. Assignments longer. 2. More time required for study. 3. Emphasis on thinking rather than on information. 4. Greater variety of subjects taught. 5. Grading more severe. 6. Courses more Intensive. 7. Note taking essential 8. Choice of courses left to Student 9. Grading on basis of quizzes, midterms and finals rather than on daily recitation. 10. More outside reading required 11. Competition of high, marks keener. Relationships Differences that have to do with student instructor relationships: 1. Student not forced or cajoled into during his work. 2. Less individual attention. 3. Lecture quiz method differs from high school method. 4. Attendance not compulsory. 5. Instructors better informed. 6. Student considered mature. 7. Better instructors. Students also found that greater responsibilities made a great difference, as did meeting new problems. Thinking is not knowing.
