Show October 19, 1935 hey Came A neat, but conspicuous sign, Welcome, Cow-girls, appeared in a beauty parlor window in New York City last week. The Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society, England Established in 1805. Some physicians later seceded because of the repeated election of Dr. Sims as president. Dr. William Saunders was the first president and early members were Matthew Baillie, Marcet, Abernethy and Edward Jenner. The Societys name became the Royal Society of Medicine in 1907. This is the world championship rodeo, shouted the Colonel, who is Managing Director of the tenth annual World Series Rodeo. Thats why we got the best stock in the world for it. The Colonel banged one plump, pink fist on his desk and then pounded his chest, hidden under a pink satin blouse trimmed with green. Last week ten thousand New Yorkers, many of them in formal dress, attended the opening of the tenth annual championship rodeo. Many of them thought it was a show. It isnt. It is a contest and each entrant pays 100 in fees, and gets no expenses or salary. The rodeo lasts nineteen days and carries a total of 40,000 in prize money. This years contestants numbered more than 200, a record for the New York rodeo. A Profession An outdoor or indoor rodeo is conducted in some part of the United States, Canada or Mexico at least 300 days in a year. Many former cowboys, whose pay on a ranch averages from 55 to 110 a month, have made a profession of rodeos. The creation of the Rodeo Association of America in 1928 made it a national sport with uniform rules. Shows are classified according to the amount of prize money offered. Eight events are listed by the Association. At the end of the year, points are totaled and the cowboy winning the largest number of points in each event is designated champion of that event. The all round champion is the one who has won the greatest total number of points. Events include bronco riding, bull dogging (dogger leaps off horse, grasps steer by horns and twists him to ground for time record), calf roping, steer decorating, steer riding, single roping, team roping and bareback riding. Colonel Johnson, who owns three Texas ranches covering 100,000 acres, is the rodeos master of ceremonies. He rides a piebald horse named Griffon, and sits in a 5,000 gold and silver figured saddle. He pays the hospital bills when the talent gets seriously injured, which is frequently. And he calls it rodeo, not ro day o. |
