Show This Gives Many Facts About FlagOne of the first things every true American boy and girl should learn is the proper respect for our flag. The resolution to have a flag of the United States of 13 alternating stripes of red and white, with 13 white stars on a blue field, was passed by our congress on June 14, 1777, and since that time June 14 has been recognized as Flag day. Programs are given and flags are displayed, but I am afraid there will be a good many boys and girls and even grown persons who will say on June 14: I wonder why all the flags are out? It isn't July 4 yet. It is interesting to know that flags of some sort have been used ever since men first began to meet and the flag they used was a symbol of the meeting place of a group with the same thoughts or objective. It seemed necessary to use some means in battle to distinguish different bands, and each ruler soon, learned to use the standard they first adopted, and as their property increased, their flags finally assumed the character of national flags. The first flags were of religious character, and men were taught to respect and honor their flag as one of the most sacred things on earth; Every country has its own flag and, while there are many brilliant colors used, red, white and blue seems to be the most popular, for from among 20 leading nations, nine have flags of these three colors. I think our national ensign flag is the most beautiful of all. The presidents standard is the next most striking with the national coat of arms on a background of blue The United States has 18 flags, and if we learn the meaning of each it will be of value to us. Our first flag was said to be made by Betsy Ross in Philadelphia in June, 1777. General George Washington headed the committee who went to her house on Arch street to commission her to make a flag for us. The one she made had 13 stars and it was so admired the government gave her a contract to make all the flags. After her death, her daughter continued the work for some time. The stars on the flag used during the war of 1812 were increased to 15, for two new states, Vermont and Kentucky, had been admitted to the Union in 1795. In 1816, Indiana made the sixteenth star. Captain S. C. Reid suggested that we keep the original 13 states and increase the stars as new states were admitted, which was adopted. Our wonderful flag and its broad stripes and bright stars were the inspiration for the song, Star Spangled Banner, which was written by Francis Scott Key, and recognized as our national anthem. Do not forget to display and salute our flag on June 14, and do not forget to take it down at sundown. SHIRLEY SYRETT. Cedar City, Utah. William Croone in 1664 wrote the first important work on muscle Johann F. Blumenbach (1752 to 1840) German physiologist and disciple of 18th century vitalism. Wrote an extensive and modern argument relating to the innate impulse of living creatures toward self development and reproduction. Author Says Todays Youth Faces Less Carefree Future Horse and Buggy Era More Conducive to Happiness, Declares Booth Tarkington KENNEBUNKPORT, Me., July 1 Booth Tarkington believes boys of today no better or worse than the lads of 1900 have less chance for adult happiness than those of the horse and buggy age. Life ahead of the boy of today will be less free and easy, said the creator of Penrod, small town boy characater of pre war days. Two Eras Reminiscing today at Seawood, his beautiful summer home in this coastal village, the Indiana authors thoughts dwelt on boys of the two eras. The horse and buggy age was the pleasantest time for a boy to live, he said. There is less liberty today; more paternalism in government will increasingly interfere with everybody. In little George Weyerhaeuser, 9 year old Tacoma, Wash., boy, who was kidnaped and later returned unharmed to tell vividly of his experiences, Tarkington saw youths current hero. I think many children are nervous about kidnaping, however, he said. Certainly their parents are. Crime development among boys he attributed to lack of church and home influence and to love of adventure. Old Influences In the days of Penrod, he said, the principal influences were the home, church and school. A characteristic of that period was attendance at Sunday school Today it is nonattendance so many parents of this generation have no church Lack of church influence seems to coincide with lack of home influence. That may sound like Puritanical doctrine, but it is true. though I can't explain it. Tarkington saw little civilizing benefit in moving pictures and radio for youth. The boy of today has three new influences, he said, the movies, the radio and the Boy Scout movement. In Penrods day he rarely saw a movie. There isnt so much of the gangster in the movies now. It bored people after a while. Will Rogers Says: HOLLYWOOD, Cal., June 20 All the big influential papers this morning are full of the sock the rich. And you can tell from the tone of their voices they have been socked. But as the scheme is mostly on inheritance it dont really hit em good till they die, so I would call that the nearest to a painless tax that could be invented. You dont pay it till you die and then you dont know it. I would sure liked to have seen Hueys face when he was woke up in the middle of the night by the president, who said. Lay over, Huey. I want to get in with you. Yours, |
