On romantic Cosos island, in the Pacific, President Roosevelt landed from his warship, and gave a beach party for British treasure hunters, seeking pirate gold. Groups from the presidents ship went hunting wild pigs on the island, easier to find than pirate gold. Cocos island is the place for Americans to go if they want gold; they might find some. They cant get any of it here; it all belongs to Uncle Sam, and he is burying it in a deep hole, waiting for somebody with airships to take it away from him. Christopher Columbus, who discovered America, has his monuments and at least one monument honors Leif Ericson, son of Eric the Red,who came here from Scandinavia several hundred years before Columbus arrived. We shall never raise a monument to the original discoverer, a Mongolian or other Asiatic who first came paddling a canoe over the waters of the far north, pioneering for various Asiatic races on this continent, including our North American Indians. It is not even certain that anybody ever did discover America. Science believes that man appeared in different forms in different places on the earth, coming up from various man shaped animals. One or more of those primitives might well have started in North or South America. This continent possessed none of the higher apes, chimpanzees, gorillas, orang outangs, but man might have developed without the assistance of those interesting creatures. For the majority, the most satisfastory and convincing account is found in Genesis, with Adam and his little family starting all the various human races. The question whose daughters did the sons of Adam marry is one not to be pressed too closely. At definite periods, according to the American Association for the Advancement of Science, something queer happens to radio. High frequency signals suddenly disappear briefly. This was first noticed on March 20, last. The next disappearance is expected between October 21 and 25. Such sudden disturbances of radio, not understood by scientists, are attributed to the suns influence. That great central power plant, the sun supplying us with light, heat, soil fertility and life, rules our destiny, and we know little about it. |
