She tore it down, neatly folded it and tucked in her notebook, and Drama has contributed a great deal to English literature. Primitive people expressed themselves to each other by the use of actions. The caveman. used drama to communicate with his companions and explain his great battles. It grew to the great Greek dramas and then into the Shakespearian and the modern dramas. Teachers must inform and educate their students in this field. They should be given, at the very least, a small course in Jamie and As dramatics. fly ln space. DISSENSION: A RIGHT AND A RESPONSIBILITY Jean Curtiss What is the real enemy of a free America? In the complex disagreement caused by American policy in Viet Nam, wherein lies the greatest danger to American morality and ideals? Are the adamant critics of the peace demonstration correct in their opinion that such protests are harmful (intentionally or not) to this country? Are many critics correct in assuming that such activities are Communist-inspired; that the student demonstrators are a group of illiterate misfits? Many people believe that the peace demonstrations are influencing troop morale in Viet Nam. Are these beliefs based on fact? Ultimately, is the peace movement a threat to the democratic way of life which most Americans cherish? Perhaps the basic concepts of the critics themselves are in error. Possibly these people do not understand or have temporarily forgotten the the principles of democracy. In either case the question posed here is not the morality of our position in Viet Nam, but the morality of the demonstrations against our position and the principles behind them. The term “democracy” is derived from a Greek word meaning “rule by the people.” Since ours is a government “‘of, for, and by the people,” ane my books she the citizens must certainly have the right to question and peaceably oppose its policies. Our government should be strengthened not destroyed by constructive criticism. A national state must gather its strength happiness. silently locker, her locker, her took her What they don’t know won’t hurt Lees tI. she don’t TANKA lace reached threw to she was flooded by a group of girls. “Oh, Jamie, that was the neatest play!” “Tt was so funny. I nearly died laughing!” “You looked so cute.’ “The play was a lot funnier ‘than last year’s comedy!” ‘Ya, I thought so, too!” Jamie tried to contradict, “But, you guys, you don’t understand, it wasn’t supposed ito be a... Well, thanks, I’m glad you liked it.” Jamie walked down the hall, her feet a little lighter than before. Her footsteps didn’t seem to have such a harsh echo now. In answer to ‘the many questions she had asked herself the night before, she replied to herself, “Keep it to yourself kid, don’t let them know, just keep it to yourself because what they Another alternative is to have the college students that are majoring in English be given a short course in the history of drama. Then they in turn could relate the information to their future students. The only other alternative we could turn to is in the following scene: Jamie hesitantly entered the school building, which smelled of recently waxed floors. She could hear her friends voices now, ringing in her ears, teasing her about what a great big flop the school play had been. Her footsteps seemed to echo PX advanced from within. We have not only the right but also the duty to become involved in the national isbecome involved in the national issues of our times. A well-informed citizenry which forms and voices intelligent opinions is essential to an effective democracy. Any loyal American will not deny that freedom if speech is a basic human right insured by our national laws. We must allow all citizens to express their views whether they agree with our own or not. Voltaire sparked the French Revolution by saying, “I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” The Clergy concerned about Viet Nam issued the statement, “The right of Americans te protest the actions of their government in time of war is inalienable.” By even partially destroying the freedom of speech, we would endanger the America “conceived in liberty” which was the dream of our forefathers and the reality which we enjoy today. Crushing the high ideals which are the hope of mankind would prove that Lincoln’s and Jefferson’s visions of a government for the welfare of the people are impractical. By destroying the freedom of speech in order to preserve America we would be protecting an empty and meaningless shell. As Senator Gale McGee of Wyoming ably expressed it, ‘“‘We must not destory our fundamental freedoms in the name of preserving them.” What type of people are these demonstrators (less than one percent of the population) who have used their freedom of speech so expressively? Reliable sources report that, contrary to popular opinion, the great majority of agitators are very bright and well-informed. According to a television documentary, swatter. PAT LEWIS 31 30 |
