Show a saanshane By DON WARNER : Ben Lomond’s fortunes in track and baseball this spring are in the hands of its young sophomores and juniors. There are senior stalwarts to be sure, but if success is to come to the Scots, the youngsters must come through. Baseball coach Blair Moyes has a flock of lettermen back, and his young prospects loo k good—this can only mean that his diamond team will do much better than the lowly finish of last season. Several starters are returning. Pitcher-outfielder Kevin Massey leads this group. Mas-| sey, a senior, is the ace of the pitching staff and can hit the} ball well. ~ ANOTHER SEASON Out in centerfield, Jeff Porter returns for another season and gives Moyes good. defense as well as a solid stick. Rick Wessler is another returning starter in the outfield and should improve in his senior year. Juniors Doug Kump at shortstop and Kenny Brubaker at third base give the Scots outstanding defense on the left side of the infield. Both are aggres- sive ball players and both at- tack the ball well. Semi-regulars from last season returning are Glade Wimmer a pitcher-outfielder; Larry Willis and Steve Costly, both senior infielders. GOOD Moyes has in the fold. fe oem ot of service | JUNIORS some good juniors Merrill Turley, a pee will ee a as will Bryon Step- ‘hens and Craig Taggart, ou The Scots edged Ogden Hig h for the Region One title last year, but the ’66 squad just doesn’t seem to have the depth to make it two in a row. They do have three big aces they can play in Zefferer,. Gil- lespie and Maw. Zefferer won the Class A mile last year with a time of 4:27.2 and is favored to repeat this season. But there is a problem — Ron has a chronic leg injury, and Hislop doesn’t expect the tall, slim, distance runner to compete until half the season is over. -. SOLID HURDLER Gillespie placed second in both the high and low hurdles in the State Meet and is expected to be a pene contender again this season. Both Gillespie and Zefferer won the Region One titles in their events and both} are almost sure-fire winners each time they run. Scott Maw was a discus champ as a sophomore, but didn't qualify for the state meet last season. But the big footballer can throw the plate out there around 170 feet and should be a strong contender for state honors: again this year. Ben Lomond has a pair of good sprinters in Otis Walton} and Randy Phipps and they should give the Scots a lot of points this season. Brad Palmer, a transfer student from Idaho looks good in the shot-put and could be a surprise for Hislop. SOPHOMORE RANKS From e, Hislop must dip} into his “sophomore ranks, He ‘fielders.
