The Department of Microbiology provides instruction in professional and liberal arts curricula for the baccalaureate degree. Students may complete either a major or a minor in Microbiology. A program leading to a career in Public Health is also available in the department. Departmental Major: Students wishing to complete a major in the department should take the following courses: Microbiology 1, 60, 158, 159, 161, 190 (3 credits), 191 (3 credits) plus an additional eighteen hours of departmental courses; Chemistry 24, 25, 26, 107, 131, 132; Mathematics 14, 18; Physics 5 (Physics 51 through 56 are recommended for students who intend to enter a graduate school); Zoology 20, 30. Ten hours credit should be selected from among Botany 150, 189, Zoology 101, 150, or 160. Basic and area requirements of the college must also be met. Departmental Minor: Minimum of twenty-five credits in departmental courses, ten of which should be upper division. Public Health: Persons wishing to follow careers in Public Health should take the program outlined for the departmental major plus Zoology 148 or 164, and Sociology 135 and 143. Courses of Instruction 1. Introductory Microbiology—Fundamental concepts of micro-organisms as biological forces affecting man. Practical application of concepts in modern-day society. Recommended for students interested in the liberal arts and cultural aspects of the subject. Four lectures and one laboratory period each week. A W S (5). Staff 5. Elementary Public Health—Public health principles and practices to promote citizen responsibility for effective community health programs. Two hours lecture and one two-hour demonstration laboratory or field trip weekly. A W S (3). Terry 50. Microbiological Procedures— Instrumentation, microscopy, staining methods, preparation of media, sterilization, measurement of pH and titratable acidity, enumeration of bacteria, preservation and maintenance of cultures, use and care of laboratory animals. Prerequisites: Microbiology 1 and Mathematics 14. One lecture and six hours of laboratory weekly. Offered alternate years. A (3). Adams 153 |
